The Republic still Works - Overturning of Prop 8 California

Proposition 8 was overturned on the grounds that it was not constitutional by Judge Vaughn Walker.

Equality under the law.

"All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal law must protect, and to violate would be oppression."
Thomas Jefferson

Equal under the law, where the law is constitutional.

good while it lasts.

The opposition received a Stay until they've filed their appeal, so there will be no gay marriages in CA this summer.

And, mark my words, this is going back to the 9th circuit, if not the supreme court.

Yep. It won't be law of the land until it makes it to the supreme court. But will the supreme court follow what is constitutional, or will they let ideological thought rule their opinions?

no offense to anyone meant
but on subjects not directly related to the economy or money, its not important, or an indication of the republic working

its just smoke and mirrors, what the "two" parties use to differentiate themselves

the really important stuff, like economics, war, military industrial complex, etc... both parties are exactly the same on the issue... and stuff like this is allowed to happen to make people think they actually have some impact in a society where government is the lackey of corporate interest and greed

i'm sure this is important to alot of people, but don't lose sight of the fact that if your master was willing to throw you that bone, they probably weren't that attached to it in the first place

look over here, but not over here

Uhhh I think civil liberties are sort of important, you douchebag. It's a shame MLK didn't include "... and gay people, too," in his I Have a Dream. We're today trudging through the same filth and muck of intolerance we supposedly conquered decades ago.

Yea, equal rights are only important when it's your rights that are involved, otherwise it's just stuff other people whine about to distract from "real" issues.

If a move towards equality is the result then I could certainly stand being "distracted" a little more often.

Part one, I think that might be a little bit harsh. Even though you (and I) believe civil liberties are important, there's no denying that they -have- been used as a distraction and a wedge issue. Albeit primarily by the conservatives. And no, both parties are -not- "exactly the same" on the "important" issues. I dunno, PHJF, maybe you weren't too harsh.

But on part two, did anyone really think we'd "conquered" prejudice and bigotry? I know I sure as hell didn't... You've never had to look far to see that it's still well accounted for, if not quite as in-your-face as Archie Bunker used to be. The human race is full of those that just love being assholes, especially when they can do so towards a relatively powerless minority, with plenty of other assholes keeping them company.
