cliff notes:
when i was a boy, i didn't have assembly language, I programed in machine code, in base 10, and I liked it!
basically I achieved all my success by ignoring business, and trying to make linux on the desktop #1, which it isn't.
NVIDIA SUCKS

Yet, I will continue to buy Nvidia graphic cards probably till I die. They really have innovated the industry in MANY ways that have stuck around, which actually makes his comments hilarious to me--another person just too particularly concerned with their field of research getting angsty--so I'd be the anti-him.

I understand the difficulty issue, but really, God all of the major makers of graphic chips are asses in this field (Nvidia *used to be* one of the good ones...). I think once Nvidia jumped into their "chipset" and other devices field, I believe that is when they really became FAR more less likely to support other sub-set projects or atleast helping them.

I don't know the whole history, but if someone else has a better vantage speak up, this is more from a hardware buying point of view.

A software point-of-view would be the next best, it would be nice to know what are the best usable graphics cards right now on the market...?

Can someone provide the Cliff's Notes version for those of us short on time?
kthx

As far as the Nvidia part, the short of it is that Nvidia has pledged Linux support because they want to sell chips to all the device manufacturers who are using embedded linux (eg all the Android devices) and since making that promise, have gone out of their way to avoid cooperating or working with anyone who desires that support.

That was refreshing and made me feel really good.

I have struggled with nVidia/ATI for years, as a developer and a gamer. nVidia is the lesser of two evils by far though. I will never touch another ATI card. In the last 12 years I have purchased 3 of them. Every few years they trick me again with higher clock speeds and lower prices, and I think to myself "they can't still be that terrible now", and I regret it every time. I can't overstate how terrible they were.

Anyway, point being that Nvidia may be a shit company to liaison with, and they stick their shit advertisements in front of every game (whether their hardware works with it or not), and have worthless, intentionally confusing product naming for heavily downclocked, overpriced hardware, and they wag their corporate ego around the industry quite mightily (much to my chagrin), but do they still work. The worst failure I've ever experienced from an Nvidia product was better than the best performance I've had from ATI, and that's not an exaggeration.

But still, I really enjoyed this.

ATI cards have given me a miserable experience too compared to Nvidia. The last ATI card which I had that was nothing but fun was my ATI VGA-Wonder in 1989.
