The Commander in Chief Test

I find it funny, I used to want more space funding, and I still do, I just have a severe distaste for this new Republican fascination with it.

I admit, I've got a liberal lens over my view, but when Republicans like Bush and McCain talk about wanting men on Mars, it sounds like self aggrandizement, but when Kennedy talked about it, it sounded like an inspirational effort for our future.

Might be the banning of stem cell research, despise for public education, denial of the need to reduce carbon emissions, and support for creationism in schools that has me doubting their dedication to scientific exploration. Or maybe I'm just biased against "small government conservatives" who want to embark on hundred billion-dollar investments over decades that will largely go to defense contractors.

Forget a US only manned mars mission in our lifetimes. Our government is too damn broke. Don't kid yourself. This nation is in debt to other nations up the wazoo. Now... a potential Chinese or Russian endorsed JOINT-manned mission to mars could be on the table. Not soon, but well before the US gets out of the hole it is currently in.

Don't get me wrong, space travel to mars isn't my highest priority. In a perfect world we wouldn’t be spending so much money on defense and wars. Our country has some serious issues in front of us that are going to require major funding. With more and more employers dropping insurance coverage, I would rather us spend the money on something more practical like a universal health care system, and not just one that covers those who can't afford it. However, Space travel has always been something to me that inspires the imagination, and I would hate to see our country lose that, and merely "pay the bills" year after year. Heck, I would settle for another trip to the moon.

NASA's current budget is less than 1/200 of the total federal expenditures. The cost of the iraq war far more than what it would take to ramp up the space program to building a biodome on the Moon and sending a man to mars.

The federal government spends more money paying farmers to not grow crops and artificially inflating the price of food than it spends on NASA.

^ If you find one that's creatively presented, discusses relevant, factual information about Obama's credentials or policy positions that comes off similarly damning, let me know.

well if there are people as dumb and ignorant as you quantum, McCain should have votes flying in by the millions...It's all just a game to you, isn't it? Red vs. Blue? Awww, must be nice to have such a small mind, makes for a much simpler life!

Yah gotta love QM pulling out the old 'Obama isn't qualified' rhetoric. I really don't see how McCain is any more qualified than Obama to run your country. I also see Obama saying things that make a lot, lot more sense in the way things should be compared to McCain's horrendous, narrow minded, right wing, conservative views.

Also, just how 'experienced' was your ol' Reagan when he went into office? Or is being an actor good enough for you right wingers.

I'm amazed that the best the Republicans could come up with was McCain, I really am.

Obama was President of the Harvard Law Review, which is a much better qualification for the presidency than getting shot down.

McCain will just go on pretending that being shot down and tortured makes him a hero. In that case, Bush should try waterboarding out on himself before he orders it used on suspects.

They missed a good opportunity with one of those words. Instead of Di plomacy, it should have been DIP lomacy.

As for space exploration, we definitely need more funding for it, but I think it should be more privatized. Give incentives for institutions and companies to create innovative designs. As an ex NASA employee, I can attest to their waste of resources/money, but then again, what government agency is run really efficiently?

Obama was born in the US. Is at least 35 years of age. Technically, he qualifies. The only thing remaining is the majority of electoral votes. He's lookin' pretty damn good on that right now.

McCain voted for Bush twice and helped him with almost everything he did. Look how that turned out. Two-face could flip his coin and do better, so I think just about anyone will improve our situation as long as it's not another Bush.

I suppose QM thinks we're doing swell right now, right? Delusions.

edit: Space funding? We need to pay down our debt before spending our money on future non-essentials. Unfortunately, we don't really need to explore Mars, so we really should fix our own problems before spending that money.

they should have ended on "I did everything i could to get him elected and re-elected" (cue Psycho soundtrack).

oh and remember we currently spend some $10-12 BILLION Dollars / MONTH on the alien planet called Iraq and soon Afghanistan.
