Smoking Pot VS Cigarettes

Results based on a collaborative study between the University of Alabama Birmingham and UC San Fransisco. Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the study distills data collected from over 5,000 people aged 18-30 over a 20 year period.

They found the same kinds of seeming contradictions in radiation of late as well. Seems like a little poison is ok, and sometimes beneficial, with diminishing returns to a point where it then becomes harmful. One might say the same thing about water or exercise as well.

What interests me about this is cigarettes are hardly just tobacco. Cigarettes are pieces of technology with a number of chemical additives included for many different reasons (and some would suggest are unhealthy and nefarious). You either need to add a similar content of chemicals to pot or use pure tobacco to be a really fair comparison, then again...maybe they did that in the study...I have not read it.

What's inside a US blended cigarette?

I suspect if you you compared smoking natural weed to smoking natural dried tobacco the negative effects health effects would be similar. Likewise, if joints were prepared in the same way as commercial cigarettes they'd be just as bad as one another.

I won't presume to know the health effects of the natural products, but I'm all for people being allowed to use them as they see fit. So long as I'm not forced to breath second hand smoke in public places because even if they're not bad for you, personally, I don't care for either.

I think it you miss the point though.

Tobacco used to be just a plant. You smoked the plant. What could be more natural?
The Big Tobacco companies took over. Now it's no longer tobacco plant you are smoking with cigarettes.

Only 50% of what is in a cigarette is tobacco and even that is treated with sugars and chemicals to make it easier for the body to absorb. The rest is chemicals, reclaim and recon which are all there to addict you while it's killing you at the same time.

With marijuana, in most cases it's still just plant, in the same form as it was when it was picked from the plant.

I don't smoke either of them but if I had to choose, I'd pick the one without the additives and addictants. I doubt there is anything "Natural" about smoking any form of grass. It's all a form of carbon monoxide (in my opinion), the grass itself is more natural and I think that counts for something.

One of the horrifying concepts in legalizing marijuana, is that Big Tobacco companies will take over the manufacturing process and will bastardize the product like it has with cigarettes and the health effects will be disastrous.

Agreed on this part - especially when kids are around (because why should they need to put up with it when they are too young to form or enforce their own opinions.)

Nah, I got all that but perhaps failed to express my point clearly. I was trying to point out that it's silly to argue (not saying you were but others do) that pot is "healthier" than tobacco since it is not being compared like to like i.e. either both natural or both with added shit. Either way my personal opinion (admittedly with out anything solid backing it up) is that any type of smoke is going to be worse for your health than clean air. Despite that I'm all for people being free to choose regardless of how good or bad it is, natural or with added shit, so long as I'm not forced to inhale it, I don't care if others want to poison themselves.

This is a study of how typical cigarette smoking compares to typical pot smoking. People don't typically smoke pure tobacco and neither do they typically inject their joints with flame retardants. There's no need to make it "fair".

One thing I've been wondering about for a while:

Cigarettes, while entirely loaded with chemicals, have about twenty grams of material per pack (of twenty cigarettes) that actually burns and is released to the atmosphere. Now picture a gallon of gas (sorry rest of the world, I'm American). That gallon of gas weighs about six pounds, or about two-thousand seven-hundred cigarettes. That's material that completely burns into the atmosphere or is filtered somehow by the car but still exists as waste. And don't forget, there are trace elements of everything in there, either burned as gas or taken out (still pollution) during the refining process.

I'd really like to see a comparison of the total harmful products of cigarettes versus gasoline that are produced every day, worldwide. I'm willing to bet that the difference is astronomical.

Now, I'm a smoker. I have no problem smoking outdoors and even then, if someone simply asks me to put out my cigarette, I'll do it. I understand that the burning of fuel, on some level, is a necessity but it seems to me that if the above assumption (and it's a big assumption, I know) is correct at all, that the only real reason anyone could have to avoid second hand smoke is that it stinks. I just can't picture it being as threatening as the world would have me believe, in comparison to all that other shit that's floating around everywhere, all the time that really isn't given much attention because it doesn't smell bad.

EDIT: Sorry, I just realized this has almost nothing to do with the video at all.
