ChaosEnginesays...I actually didn't think this was Seth's best work. I'm a big fan of his "Closer Look" segment, but I don't find him that funny with his one-liners.
Also, genuine question: why did Oprah win the Cecil B. de Mille Award? I mean, she's undoubtedly a successful person, but her filmography is pretty mediocre.
The last few winners were:
Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Jodie Foster, Woody Allen, George Clooney, Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep.
There's no way you could argue that Oprah belongs in that company. (not really sure why Clooney is there either, TBH, also get lost Woody Allen, you creepy old fuck).
But still, upvote for the sentiment if not the execution.
newtboysays...Harpo productions is most likely why Oprah won....and her show, channel, filmography, and overall social impact. I don't know what their criteria are, do you?

ChaosEnginesays...According to Wikipedia...
The Cecil B. DeMille Award is an honorary Golden Globe Award bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment".
Sorry, still don't see it. Harpo Productions is responsible for (among others) The Oprah Winfrey Show, Dr. Phil, Rachael Ray and The Dr. Oz Show (which, I would argue, is actually a social harm).
She's had a hand in a few interesting films (notably Selma), but she's just not in the same league as previous winners.

newtboysays...To be honest, except for a few of her movie rolls, I've never been a fan, and I totally agree about Dr Oz etc., but between the shows, channel, production company, magazine, and movie rolls her contributions to entertainment are pretty outstanding in their ubiquity if not quality.

Asmosays...Roughly the equivalent of awarding McDonald's 3 Michelin stars.

geo321says...on the cynical side of things, which I am. Oprah backed and funded Corporate Democrats instead of progressive people the last 20 years. that is to say she supports old school corrupt establishment democrats
geo321says...Think the Clintons, Obama, Cory Booker now, she is powerful, and supports powerful people that she rolls with
newtboysays...Worse, she's another political virgin/celebrity.
Please oh please, Democrats, don't double down on putting media stars in the most powerful position on the planet. It's horrendous, even when you think you agree with their stated plans. Once is more than enough for this lunacy.

newtboysays...Ha!
I thought it was more like making Trump the Time magazine person of the year, about quantity, not quality. Love or hate her, you must admit her brand is huge.

geo321says...Mark Zuckerberg for 2020? lol

geo321says...It's more about the democratic party being corrupt is why the younger generation of progressives have zero loyalty to it. Its either batshit crazy corrupt party #1, or corrupt as hell party #2 rigging as much as they can to keep being corupt
newtboysays...I agree, except bat shit crazy party is also corrupt as hell, probably more so than corrupt as hell party....so corrupt that they're willing to act bat shit crazy for the money.
Please, Sanders, run as an independent...you'll win by the biggest margin ever.

ChaosEnginesays...Say what you want about Trump, and fuck knows I despise the illiterate, racist, sexist, homophobic, moron... but he totally deserved person of the year. The exact same way Hitler did.
And there's no way in hell Sanders would win as an independent, at least, not until you fix your thoroughly broken electoral system.

newtboysays...I agree, Time has been clear that it's about amount of impact, not who made the biggest positive impact.
I could certainly be wrong, it happened that one time before, but I think you underestimate how disillusioned Americans are with both parties and how ready we are to abandon them both. I really hope I'm not wrong about that.
Remember, Sanders was holding his own in funding without any corporate donors....astonishingly. No other candidate has had that kind of finance reform credentials that I recall, certainly not recently, and imo, that's step one for any reforms there.
I don't know what you mean if you're talking about the electoral college. I agree, it's outdated and it's time to toss or rewrite it, but I don't think it's so rigged that he couldn't win.

ChaosEnginesays...The electoral college is part of the problem certainly, but even that could be done better. Even the way Maine and Nebraska do it would be a vast improvement.
I don't believe it's "rigged", it's just a bad voting system, and it suffers from all the problems with FPP voting systems in addition to its unique crapulence.

Asmosays.../grin Reminds me of an old Doug Anthony All Stars joke...
Oprah Winfrey is the fattest most powerful woman on the planet earth.
It takes the entire Panama canal and three Kansas wheat belts to feed Oprah every day.
Oprah Winfrey, you are the Gross National Product!
Ha!
