PaybackI'm pretty sure self driving vehicles are going to be killed off by the legal responsibilty problem.
If you're the only person in your self driving car, and it runs a little old lady over, who's at fault? If you're still going to be at fault, because it's your car, then people won't buy them in any great numbers. If you have to be just as attentive even though you have no control, people won't buy them.
I see self-correcting cars being popular. The car that decides "oh, you're an idiot, I'm gonna save you" and then does so.

newtboyIn order to go anywhere, I either have to drive 6 hours to SF or add $500+ for airfare to take a puddle jumper/prop airplane from here to there. That trip has gotten really old, as has the 12-16 hour drive to LA. I SO wish this tech would be perfected, I would rent one every time I had to make the trip if I can't buy one.
I've been driving for over 30 years...I'm over it. Certainly there are times when I want control, but there are more times when I just wish the car would take me home and I could pass out from exhaustion. The Tesla update isn't quite there yet, but it's a big step in that direction....once they get there, I just need someone to hand me a Tesla and I'm set. Oprah...I'm looking in your direction.
PaybackSame here, only when I get to that point, I hop back into my Mustang and I'm reminded of how much I enjoy the open road and scaring pedestrians...

gorillamanA ship then new they built for him
of mithril and of elven-glass
with shining prow; no shaven oar
nor sail she bore on silver mast:
the Silmaril as lantern light
and banner bright with living flame
to gleam thereon by Elbereth
herself was set, who thither came
and wings immortal made for him,
and laid on him undying doom,
to sail the shoreless skies and come
behind the Sun and light of Moon.
