Republican Congresswoman - "Shepard Hate Crime a Hoax!"

4/29/09 - Countdown's Worst Person : Keith covers Bachmann's continual factual gaffes, but more incendiary are Republican Congresswoman Virginia Foxx's comments that a well known brutal hate crime was a hoax. Unbelievable!

Why do these people remain in office? Incapable of getting the facts straight before giving a speech, but still able to make wise policy decisions? I don't think so.

How do these stupid, worthless, pieces of shit get anywhere near a position of power? Seriously, how does it happen?

Something needs to be done.

Who's fault is this REALLY... her?... or the people that keep electing her? Either of them!

Both of these incomprehensibly stupid woman were elected... Scary to even think about.

Ok, I must be missing something about Fox's comments.

Fox says that Shepherd was not killed because of the fact that he was gay but rather because the men were wanting to rob him.

Olbermann rebuts this by saying that the men knew that Shepherd was gay and that they acted gay themselves in order to lure him into seclusion. Did any of the attackers ever say that they attacked him because he was gay?

Isn't a hate crime one that is committed because the victim is gay, black, etc? I don't know a lot about this case, but from this video it sounds like they wanted to rob him and just happened to use the fact that he was gay to lure him into a vulnerable situation.

I think she is actually making a good point. It is not a hate crime simply because the victim is gay, even if the attackers know he is gay. If they attacked him because he was gay then that would be a hate crime, but Olbermann didn't mention the attackers ever saying that. They may have attacked him because of his sexual preference, but that is never established in this video.

Testimony in the trial revealed that the killers specifically sought a gay man for robbery and assault. I'd say that qualifies as a hate crime. Whether that's true or not seems to be a point of ongoing contention.

I still disagree with hate crime laws.

Yea, I'm not sure I understand the point of hate crime laws myself. If people are going to torture and kill someone then why does it matter if they did it because he was gay? It seems like a pretty terrible thing to do for any reason.

I've always thought that the law... much like the death penalty was under the mistaken impression that the people who commit this soft of act, considered and thought out the consequences of their punishment.

I suspect while they may even have good intentions, neither does anything as a deterrence.
