NordlichReitersays...The judge should be stripped of her robes, and made to parade in her birthday suit down the main street.
Simple, tell the sheriffs deputy in the court to get the lady a jumpsuit, or a pair of sweat pants.
These kinds of abuses of power are unethical, and unlawful.
So the judge can now tell me what suit I can or cannot wear? If she was arrested on the charge of her clothes were bad, then that is a false charge.
The charge should have been contempt of court.
dystopianfuturetodaysays...Not to detract from this obvious abuse of authority, but that girl is hilarious. "I have toad you twice..." Watch out for them tombstones.
MarineGunrocksays...I'm sure she wasn't jailed for her outfit. More likely the judge wasn't going to jail her but decided to after she showed disregard for her (judge's) word.
brycewi19says...Nothing beats a good drive through the cemetery!
Enzobluesays...I'm not surprised at all. I once got thrown out of an Orange County court house for wearing khaki shorts and I'm a guy. The judge looked at me and said, "You don't wear shorts in my courtroom son". This chick came in with a tank top and no bra one day, then shorts and a baby-doll top the next? That's IS disrespectful.
Not that I'm a prude, but judges expect suit and tie most the time.
MaxWildersays...Judges can take a flying leap. Egotistical bastards. How about judging a case on its merits?
buzzsays...How is it relevant what she was in court for? Unless she went in stark naked, or broke some sort of law, wtf???????????????
rougysays...That judge is an asshole.
This girl just isn't very bright and didn't understand what was being asked of her.
To toss somebody like that in jail over something so petty is downright heartless.
laurasays...Damn, they don't even know what she was wearing when she drove through the cemetary and hit a tombstone? Why not? What is this world comming to?

Something is only disrespectful if there is intent to disrespect. It doesn't sound like the woman had any idea she was dressed inappropriately, so I don't believe she was disrespecting the judge.
A judge can expect a rainbow wig and a bunny slippers, but that doesn't give them the right to hold someone in contempt because of they don't come to court wearing them, this isn't My Cousin Vinny.
Judges are assholes, even the good ones, you can't help but get that way when your job gives you such power over the lives of others. I've had quite a few dealings with judges outside of their work, and they've mostly been unpleasant, petty, demanding jerks.
And the judge in this situation is just a bitch.
thinker247says...I was going to say how ridiculous this is, but then I remembered it's in Kentucky, which is still trying to force its citizens into the 1950s. They have an odd view of "respect."
quantumushroomsays...Once she saw the size of my "gavel", Blondie took to wearing a nun's habit ALL the time.
xxovercastxxsays...Man, what is with you people? It's court! Criminal court, no less... not traffic court. You dress professionally when you go to court. Even if you weren't required to, you want to make the best possible impression, especially if you're the accused.
So this dimwit was held in contempt for showing up to court like it was a beach party? Good. Why the fuck is it on the news?
http://bluegrassbeat.wordpress.com/2008/08/21/judge-jails-woman-for-wearing-short-shorts/
Awesome... got an extra day because she got caught trying to smuggle buprenorphine into jail with her, too.
Aniatariosays...Maybe some people can't afford fancy clothes, maybe some people aren't familiar with court proceedings. This is all an issue of etiquette and cultural custom. Not law.
SaNdMaNsays...The stupid bitch should've dressed appropriately. But still, what is this, Saudi Arabia?
HollywoodBobsays...I've seen attorneys wearing skirts that showed more skin then the shorts that have been described.
It sounds like she's got a substance abuse problem, so it's entirely possible that her mind is a bit addled and she did truly forget that she had been commanded to dress in a more prudish manner.
I still don't think she meant any disrespect, and I get the impression that had she gone in wearing anything other than a business suit/dress, the bitch on the bench would have tossed her in the pokey.
Xaxsays...What an idiot. I'll save my sympathy for something worthy, thanks.
gorillamansays...Because basic human rights and rational legal systems aren't worthy issues. Within obvious bounds, there's no such thing as appropriate and inappropriate clothing for a court appearance. You don't deprive people of their liberty because they fail to participate in inane tribal membership/submissive display behavior. Judge ought to be set on fire.
Aniatariosays...To be completely honest I never liked the "traditional" way courthouses are constructed. The lowly accused are brought before a Judge who is quite literally placed above everyone else. High and mighty in a leather bound Judges chair.
I know that within some Cree and Ojibway communities (where folks are allowed to pass judgment within their own cultural contexts) the accused aswell as the jury sit on even ground within a circle. Ofcourse this method may seem rather unorthodox within European/American culture, but it seems to have worked on dysfunctional youth in some troubled communities.
Perhaps its just the way the profession is presented that allows some judges to fall into an abuse of power.

A clean pair of jeans and a long sleeve shirt would be enough to stay out of jail. If she couldn't afford them, perhaps she could have skipped a few drug purchases to save up the cash.
Not familiar with court proceedings? Maybe that would be a reasonable excuse for your first visit. Kirstie has been in court more times this month than most of us will be in our entire lives; she ought to have picked up on a few things by now no matter how zooted she is. Certainly the previous 2 warnings and fine should have gotten her attention.
"She aw-ways picks ohn meh; she aw-ways has some comment tah say about meh!"
Oh no! The judges are saying mean things to our dearest repeat offenders? We must do something to stop this before lowlifes and layabouts all across this great nation are reduced to tears!
MarineGunrocksays...^THANK YOU.

Fair enough but i still think its a dumb reason to throw someone in jail.
brainsays...I think there are two questions here. You can ask how she should be expected to dress. In which case, sure, she should probably dress professionally. However, another question to ask is if the judge should have the ability to throw her in jail over her wardrobe choices.
I feel like what is considered professional is a cultural issue and I don't feel like we should enforce culture in our courtrooms. Now, it may be a smart idea to dress what most people in the US consider professional. But the judge can do her job just fine whether she's wearing short shorts or in a bikini. We have laws on indecent exposure. If she's not breaking them, who cares? The judge should just do her job and move on. Who cares if she's "disrespecting the courtroom"? Judges that care are just on a power trip.
Aniatariosays...^THANK YOU.

Were she tossed in jail for an extended period of time or if she were tossed in jail on her first visit, without warning, I'd be more inclined to agree with you.
Three days might have been unnecessary, but she did have more than ample opportunity to avoid it. I spent a day in jail (as tech support, not a prisoner) and it's really not a big deal. I had it harder than the inmates did.
Whether the rules of courtroom behavior should be as they are is another question, as you said. Of course a lot of it stems from the fact that someone showing up "in a bikini" is disruptive.
Kruposays..."Cute chick"? Ah yes, comedy.
Paybacksays...OMFG! WHY DIDN'T SHE WEAR WHAT SHE DRESSED UP IN FOR THE INTERVIEW?????
She has more respect for Channel 27 News than the courts?
qruelsays...shouldn't the question be... was there a sign or law posting what is considered acceptable court attire and did she violate a known rule or law ?
if this was all based upon the subjective views of that judge then I call bullshit.
peggedbeasays...so at child support court one time, this couple was totally making out and dry humping in the back of the room. noone said anything. i was mesmorized.
