Nuclear Power, it has to be Safe, Environment Blah Blah Blah

garmachisays...

MSNBC is almost (but not quite) as bad as FOX news for going out of their way to mock candidates rather than presenting facts and assuming that the viewer is intelligent enough to decide for him or herself. Blah blah blah, indeed.

RedSkysays...

Partisan nonsense.

There's no reason hazardous waste should be a threat to anyone if it's stores properly. Threat of nuclear terrorism? Be serious. McCain was just trying to be comical, as puerile as it was, there's nothing wrong with it.

McCain appeals to the "lesser angels," meaning, the ignorance and small-mindedness that carves up the world into good and evil, black and white, right and wrong.

Unfortunately, the real world tends to be more complex, more nuanced and complicated than that. Even more unfortunately, tho, the American educational system is such that most Americans wouldn't know that and, as such, believe the world to be as simple and uncomplicated as their network television would have them believe. Thank you, sitcoms!

I'm surprised by the comments assuming nuclear power is safe, as if it's a given. As if the safety of our nuclear power plants can be dismissed from thought. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU!

Yes, our power plants are generally safe, but they will only stay that way through constant vigilance. Do not trivialize the matter. That is how the Chernobyl disaster happened. On top of that, they are prime targets for terrorist strikes, so even if you could eliminate human error inside the plant, you must constantly guard against unknown factors from outside the plant.

I don't want that to happen here or anywhere else for that matter, and I will not support someone who thinks it is not a serious matter.

^I think you should do some research on the Chernobyl disaster. The incredible series of insanely neglectful and stupid decisions that had to occur for that to happen simply boggles the mind. And all that is within a system that had incredibly lax codes compared to our very rigorous ones. There will never, ever be a disaster at a US nuclear plant that would affect the local region. To suggest otherwise is to be an ignorant fearmonger. You really shouldn't disparage nuclear power when you know little to nothing about it.

^How? Because it scared people? That doesn't count. There are no deaths or injuries to plant workers or members of the nearby community which can be attributed to the accident.

The leak was immediately contained and the plant is still in operation today.

Just because Nuclear reactors COULD be dangerous, doesn't mean that the regulations and systems already in place don't work or aren't safe.
