Noam Chomsky on Ron Paul Supporters

volumptuoussays...

It's not that the pseudo-libertarians just hate the government. They especially hate the fact that there's a black guy in the white house.

For some reason they think giving billions in tax breaks to mega-millionaires was OK, but giving some health care to middle and lower class citizens is preposterous, or treasonous.

GET GOVERNMENT OUT OF MY MEDICARE!

blankfistsays...

The race card? I see what you did there.

I doubt you can accurately make such a sweeping accusation against Libertarians, @volumptuous. I believe you'd find racism in any party or political affiliation. I don't care that Obama is black. I care that he's stealing more of my money.

[edit] I just watched the video. As a Libertarian I can tell you none of what Om Nom Chomsky proposes as common ground to approach us is going to work. None of it. If you came to us and tried to say that April 15th is a day we should welcome because in a democratic society it's money taken for things we all agreed upon, you'd probably get laughed at. Stealing money produced from someone's labor is theft, and having the majority decide how much of that money needs to be stolen and where it needs to be spent is not our idea of a good selling point for your cause.

So, bf, in your ideal America, how would the government get money to function, and who would decide what is appropriate for that money to be spent on? I mean, there's gotta be some sort of government for enforcement of contracts, common defense, and such. Otherwise we'll all end up in little totalitarian city-states at war with each other.

To me, the basic premise of majority rule with a bill of rights to protect minorities is the only logical means of governance. Of course that is being perverted right now by lobbyists and out of control campaign finance donations, but shouldn't we be fighting to return our government to a limited democracy/republic?

@MaxWilder. Here's a good place to start:

User fees, lotteries and endowments are voluntary. For example, gasoline tax was meant to cover the cost of building and maintaining roads. The more you drive, the more you pay. This isn't some libertarian utopia, this is the system we have currently. Of course they don't use that money for its purpose any longer, and instead dump it into a general fund, I believe.

The issue with privatising things , espesualy in a culture of make all the profit you can regardless of how it affects the people , is you end up with situatoins like you have with the amercan helth care service.

the fact is if the amercan helth care service was more goverment controled and paid for with taxes it would be a better service for the vast majorty of the populatoin.

there would still be waistage but at least it would be in a positoin where if it was bad it could then be changed easily,

if things are controled by super ritch multicoperate entities which is basicly what would happen in a full libatarian socity you would end up with a socity of super ritch and super poor.

if annything america is alredy to far down the "libitareain" road , and needs to work on bieng more socalist and democratic.

There are manny laces where goverment should not get involved , but there are manny places where goverment is benoficail to a socity.

from reeding all the pionts on theat website it seems that libatarinisum in a large part just says no to goverment for the sake of it without actualy evlauating in each case if goverment could be good , it just asumes that goverment is always bad with no thought.

Look, the Left/Right Democrat/Republican etc have screwed the American people and now we are nearing some deep shit if we don't act. Bush fuck the conservatives by spending like there is not tomorrow. This drove lots of Republicans from the party and drove them to the Likes of RON PAUL. ( When Ron Paul ran for president he just wanted to follow the Constitution.) The Left hated Bush like there is no tomorrow and gave us Obams. Obama has his foot slammed against the gas peddle and is driving us off the financial cliff.

So now we have 1/3 Americans leaning hard right, 1/3 leaning hard left and the rest in the middle. This is not good. Being hard left and hard right just builds resentment towards one another.

We must find common ground! The only common ground that I see is to stand with what our founding father gave us, The Constitution. We must drop Democrat/ Republican and get back to our roots.
