People are already whining about this show before it's even on TV. I don't understand why someone can't play a retard on tv. Do retards not exist? Would it be wrong to depict someone dying because we don't like it when people die?

Well, having watched the entire Derek programme I can say that this is by faaaaar, the worst, most unfunny, cringeworthy and down right predictable "comedic" 30 minutes you could ever watch. This is easily the most disappointing thing Ricky Gervais has been involved in.

Not his best work. I did like Karl's character though. And I kept waiting for Merchant's cameo.

But Karl was never supposed to be dumb, that's just how most of us view him on face value. Gervais has stated many times that he's one of the smartest guys he knows, just uneducated and coming from a very alternative angle.

Having worked around people with learning difficulties a lot, I really think this was bang on the money. I especially relate to the care worker who finds Derek and the special stuff he says and does absolutely hilarious and makes no apologies for it.
