McCain: "I Would Imagine That We Are" In A Recession

shuacsays...

^ Well, McCain would operate the cart in much the same fashion as the previous hot dog guy, while always denying similarities. He'd say he offers different kinds of relish and sauerkraut when he knows the relish man and the sauerkraut man work for the same global conglomerate. The bun supplier is a personal friend of the existing hot dog man's family and he has powerful friends in the entire bakery industry, allowing for price-fixing and unfair labor practices. Finally, the hot dogs themselves: clearly, the most important part of running a hot dog stand. McCain would continue to allow Americans to depend on hot dogs because that's the way it has always been. Never mind Jonesville bratwurst or Italian sausage, which are tastier and more wholesome,

Wait, what was I saying?

I'm no fan of McCain, but "Are we in a recession?" is, as he pointed out, a technical question that is almost impossible to answer. He did about as good as he could with his answer.

A recession is defined to be a period of two quarters of negative GDP growth. What the fuck are you talking about? impossible to answer my ass, its a simple question where a yes or no answer would suffice. Mcain the bullshit express avoided the question and its implications directly and instead talked about hurting American families, and CONGRESS approval rating, not bush... What a douche bag.

What's GDP growth right now?

The last reported quarter (Jan-Mar), we had 1% growth. So if we are in a recession it would of had to have started in the Apr-Jun quarter and it hasn't been determined yet. Do you know what GDP growth was in the Apr-Jun quarter? And since a recession is two quarters in a row of negative growth, do you know what GDP growth is going to be this quarter (you know, the one that started 9 days ago)?

So you try and answer the question. Are we in a recession? Yes or no?

I imagine McCain cannot answer questions he doesn't like being asked.
Technically he didn't answer the question.
I imagine technically McCain hasn't got the balls to say "We are in a recession" because the president says "The war is good for the ecomony"

Liar.

Here's how I would answer the question. "Based on last quarters figures, we had a net gain in our gross domestic product, therefore by definition, no we are not in a recession"

I'm not pissed because I think he's lying, I'm pissed because he doesn't FUCKING KNOW! I mean, I don't know but, then again, I'm not running for President and I'm sure I'd find out if I were.

But you can't say we're not in a recession. We might be. Growth in the first quarter was positive, but we don't know about the second (not reported yet) and third (current) quarters.

haha so you're saying you'll never know if you're in a recession until it already happened?

and what are you...one of the econonatromacists?

In late November 2001, the National Bureau of Economic Research determined that a recession began the previous March - eight months earlier.

The point here was that this is a softball question, and McCain missed it, and kept swinging away fruitlessly.

I mean, that's a really surprising question, being asked if we're in a recession. Can't be a question he'd have expected, and been prepared for.

Even if he wasn't prepared for it, surely he's got some position on it, even if he wants to say "not good, but not recession" or "everything's great", it's better than this goofiness.
