Farhad2000says...I loved this film, I watched it at the cinema by pure chance during a depressing day and it really lifted my spirits. Hilarious and touching all at the same time.
Maybe a bit *nsfw?
Kruposays...That scene was absolutely hilarious/classic comedy.
mauz15says...lol I have to watch this movie again
plastiquemonkeysays...i hate this movie! especially this scene...
so lame. and mean.
i feel so sorry for the poor, lonely americans, stuck in an expensive hotel in tokyo. meanwhile, everyone laughs at the japanese woman's accent, speaking english in her home country. i'd like to hear bill murray speak nihongo sometime...
LadyBugsays...the only redeeming thing about this movie was this is where i fell in love with scarlett ... i just didn't (and still don't) see what all the hype is about.
there was absolutely zero chemistry between bill and scarlett ... just leaves a bad taste in my mouth ...
sorry, doggy ... no vote.
Farhad2000says...Strange PM I watched the movie several times and never felt offense towards the Japanese people. In actuality I was intrigued by it more then anything else and it fortified my desire to visit it one day.
dagsays...Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag.(show it anyway)
I liked this movie but agree that this scene plays with a tired cliche for a cheap laugh.
What a I liked about the movie, aside from feeding my Nihon-a-phile feelings, was that the affection they felt for each other was something other than carnal. That last scene, where he whispers in her ear, and you don't get to hear what he said, really, really got me.
therealblankmansays...Hmmm... I'd never thought about this scene in that way, plastiquemonkey, but I really appreciate your offering a different perspective. I laughed at this scene, but certainly not at the woman's accent. That's not what the scene means to me. What it, and really the whole movie is about, at least in large part, is how uncomfortable and lonely the main characters are- truly strangers in a strange land. I think it is a universally applicable theme and story. Think of transposing the Bill Murray character into a Japanese or Italian star visiting say, Toronto, and a prostitute interrupting their repose with a slapstick seduction and broken language. Just as funny.
swampgirlsays...I'm with Dag here. I was fortunate to spend a year there and much of this movie made me miss it.
deputydogsays...Wow, I thought everyone loved this film. I can see your point though PM, never crossed my mind.
I think it's a beautiful film in every way and even if it wasn't I could watch Bill Murray reciting the dictionary and find it enthralling.
plastiquemonkeysays..."strangers" have to try hard to mix into the new place. a japanese star visiting new york city would expect to speak english and wouldn't be bothered to find american things there. american things are "normal", they're not "strange". if you're not from "america" (culture), when you go there, it's not strange -- YOU'RE strange.
it's not universal. you can't make the movie in reverse. imagine "mystery train", if the japanese couple goes to memphis and doesn't like elvis and thinks rock and roll is "strange" and boring. imagine they think the hotel bathroom is disgusting because the toilet and the bathtub are in the same room, instead of separate like normal, clean people do (i still think this way). no way.
rickegeesays...i love mystery train, especially that first segment. cold fever is also very, very good and does the "strangers in a strange land" bit right.
lost in translation is pretty much a melodrama about American exceptionalism. or a collection of gently-lit scenes concerning narcissism with music. I like the poster.
