I think you've got that wrong. Other people are using money within an incredibly wasteful system. He is living off of everything that money buys but doesn't use. In the same way that owls, raccoons and hyenas are not hunters, he is not using money.

Other than that, he is doing something which inspires people to donate to him, not in money but in goods.

Neither of these activities requires his use of money. Just because he lives within a society where money is present doesn't mean that he is participating in that system.
