Karl Pilkington: An Idiot Abroad

Xaielaosays...

This looks fantastic. I love the animated podcasts on HBO they are so funny in large part because of Mr. Pilkington. 'Karl is a genius trapped in an idiot' is the perfect way to describe him. From what I've heard he comes from wealth, barely ever left his place as a child and was all but completely ignored by his parents and went on to educate himself. So he is completely innocent to the world around him but also willing to say every last thing that comes into that perfectly round head of his.

When ever I watch it if my other half is around she always feels sorry for him (though she still laughs at his comments same as everyone else.) Perhaps if he had come from and into different circumstances he would be someone you'd pity. But considering how famous all of this has made him and how he is adored almost word over because of who he is, you cant really say he has it bad. Especially when the man doesn't even seem to realize he is being picked on constantly lol.

I agree, he was great in the Ricky Gervais show. After watching the first season I realized like 80% of the laughs come from Carl, which is pretty impressive given Ricky is right there.

I just hope they get rid of the subtitles. Somehow they're so irritating to me that I think it would ruin the whole thing. He's not that hard to understand after a couple minutes.

Yea once you get to know his little jargon he's pretty easy to understand.

And to me, half the laughs were from Carl but the other half were simply from Ricky Gervais' giggling and all-out laughing at times.

But it's an act right? We don't actually believe that a person with Karl's public persona actually exists and happens to be friends world-renowned funny man Ricky Gervais?

It's much more likely that Karl is a genius, like Gervais, and parlays that into this buffoonish character. Like Colbert in the very early days, when occasionally you could tune into his show and for a short while not be sure if it was satire or not..

Right?

I'm so happy that there's love for Karl on the sift.

Whether Karl is real or not is still up for debate on www.pilkipedia.co.uk which is pretty much the premier site to talk about the squozen orange-headed one.

A lot of people insist that he's 100% genuine, some say that his persona has changed a bit as time went by, almost like he's got slower and stupider. Some people claim that this is because he's opened more as ricky makes him feel more comfortable about his own persona.

Personally, i think during the early years when they got together on XFM, Mr. Dilkington was 100% genuine, but i think as time went by, he began to ham it up to make it appear funnier. I don't think Ricky or Steve cajole/cajoled him into doing that, i just think he realised why he was funny. I think nowadays both Ricky and Steve realise that the shaven-chimp-coconut-face is hamming it up, but no one minds.

I wouldn't say he's acting or pretending to be stupid, i'd just say that he adds 20% stupidity onto his already whopping stupidity.

But also, i feel he's far funnier during the early years of XFM before he started to ham it up a bit.

BTW, please check out pilkipedia. If you liked the ricky gervais show and guides to, you can find hundreds of episodes of radio shows which are FAR FAR FAR funnier than any of the audiobooks/podcasts they did. Much of the material and format was taken from the radio shows in fact.

...I may have just sown the seed for hundreds of future pilkingtod-junkies like myself. Once you start on those radio shows, there's no going back, it's some of the funniest material of any kind i've ever come across.
