Jon Stewart gives Chris Matthews a book interview from Hell

Jon Stewart is very critical of the premise of Chris Matthews book "Life is a Campaign" causing Matthews to exclaim "this is a book interview from hell, this is the worst interview I've ever had in my life".

Quoting a few lines doesn't mean you read the book. One of his assistants might have read it. Do you really think he reads a book for every Daily Show episode? If so, then respect for Jon, but I doubt it.

I actually thought this was strange. Seriously: think of all the people Jon has had on the show that he could've (and should've) gone after, but didn't. I think deciding to get snarky during what's supposed to be a friendly chat with Chris Matthews was bad form.

Give Matthews a safe place to smoke his crack and let him be.

The Prince reference was golden...and Stewart handled the end quite deftly, imho.

And...bad form? The guy is a proposing that false promises by public servants trump proper representation. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong about the thesis of the book, but: what a fucking jackass. I would have been happier with a public flogging, actually.

I haven't read the book, but I suspect you're wrong (I'll probably go see him at Politics and Prose this upcoming week). My understanding is that his thesis has little to do with proper behavior by politicians. Rather, it has to do with regular folks adopting habits for success that are informed by the way politicians campaign. There's a big difference between the two.

Look, the show is a comedy show, so Jon can't play the heavy all the time. He shouldn't even try, and he knows it. Given that, he has to pick his battles, and should save the toughest interviews for the biggest jerks. Think about it: he's had Mehlman, Card, Bolton, Greenspan, etc, and was as sweet as apple pie (comparatively). Those were folks with real influence, doing real damage to the country. Then he gets a chode like Matthews--who nobody cares about anyway--and is a total ass to him. What sense does that make?

In other words, the reason I think it was bad form was because it seems like Jon got his priorities mixed up. I like the guy, and I love the show, but to my mind he fucked this one up.

I never saw Chris Matthews' show or heard him speak, but after I looked up this book I realized I wasn't missing out on ... anything.

What a proper fuckwad. The entire philosophy of this book is EVERYTHING that is wrong with our political system and culture.

"One of his assistants might have read it. Do you really think he reads a book for every Daily Show episode?"

Yes, of course. Liberals are funny that way.

"…you don’t have to believe a word they say, but watch how far they got…."

Matthews said that. Chris...you have lost your way, boy.

The difference between liberals and conservatives is this:

Conservatives will lie to make it seem like the truth is on their side.

Liberals will be on the side of the truth.

Stewart: 1
Matthews: -1

damn rougy, you too with the "conservative vs liberal" bunkum?

to be fair to matthews, he was entertaining and defended his work, it was an easy line of attack from Jon Stewart and was obviously a bit sneaky.

i think his criticism of the book was fairly simple and not necessarily political:

the book seems to encourage behaving selfishly and strategically without a mature and intelligent consideration of ethics.

Geez... "How to be a Narcissist" Lovely.

To be fair, that's what an awful lot of 'self help' books boil down to. Matthews does have a point in that it probably is effective but only in a purely superficial-goal oriented lifestyle. I haven't read it, and I wouldn't be surprised if it actually deals with the various philosophical ramifications of that viewpoint, but geez... I pitty the person who takes that seriously.

It really is representative of all that's gone wrong with American values.
