harlequinnjokingly says...Probably an Italian skipper. Italian skippers are widely known for their skill and safety.
Paybacksays...There seems to be a lot of wind. Even with tugs, there was going to be a problem. The ship doesn't have "thrusters" in the usual sense, but the main drive is on pivoting nacelles or "azipods". To keep from running aground in the winds, they obviously had to ramp them up beyond what would normally be used.
SFOGuysays...Correct; Azipods. However, I thought that might be a bit of a technical reach. You know, as a skipper of a smaller craft, I'm expected to use some judgement---if the winds are too great, don't take my boat out. I think the skipper and pilot here screwed up.
But maybe someone can offer more perspective.

BicycleRepairMansays...Someone screwed up leading up to this , , but the engine thrust causing the destruction was probably the right call , for whatever reason , the ship was on its way to simply crash into the marina, and that would likely cause _much_ more destruction. Also obviously too late to call the tug boats . (When the video starts)
SFOGuysays...Yah, hard to know the particulars---and the wind and current probably would have worked against this idea---but---I did have a sailing instructor who stress tested me in a narrow channel by proposing that I'd just lost the engine---now what would I do?
The correct answers? Well, it's a sailboat, dummy---you could sail. And if all else fails---drop anchor (as long as you had the swing room; and even if you didn't, the resulting collision would be less impressive.)
But---we don't really know how the captain and pilot got into this situation.
I look forward to learning more.
