Reminds me of this film: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1540133/ Which is damned excellent.

I always thought Bad Lieutenant should be a franchise where different, distinctive directors tackle the corrupted cop story. Harvey Keitel and Nikki Cage were brilliant as filthy cops.

I saw this today (preview screening in the UK) -- great film, although I can't comment on how closely it follows the book as I haven't read it.
