Incredible Game-Winning 65-Foot Buzzerbeater

Down by two with 2.6 seconds left in overtime against NC State, Florida's Chandler Parsons picks up a missed free throw, dribbles twice, and hurls it from beyond half court. Above the roar of the crowd, two sounds stand out: the buzzer, and a swish.

Is there a better strategy there for the free throw shooter? Violently spike it off the rim?
Possibly, but then you might risk it going out of bounds before the 2.6 seconds are up. Despite what happened here, I'd say it was still the best call in their situation.

The better strategy would have been to make the shot. Then SC would have still been up by 1 after the 3-pointer dropped.

Your elementary school math teacher just felt a pang of disappointment.

(Either that, or you didn't realize that free throws are 1 point apiece.)

Er... right... it would be tied, I mean. >> ^ReverendTed:

also, NC and SC are different states/schools =)

and while I agree that he should have just made the shot, even the announcer says "wise move, missed the free throw"... really either way the chances of them making the 3 were so small... >> ^xxovercastxx:

Well, they played the odds.

With a missed free throw, it was highly unlikely Florida would make a winning shot.
With a hit free throw, it was somewhat more likely that they would make a tying shot, since the ball would go in at half-court.

yeah I agree, what they did made sense... I guess I don't know basketball that well, but I didn't think the ball would go in at half court, but right behind the basket. it'd stop the clock though, which would give them all the time in the world for a cross court pass in, then a 3. but even then, it'd only be tied (unless there was a foul)...

anyways, like i said, i went to NCSU and even i'm not really mad about it or anything. it was a good shot, they deserve the win.

UNC losing to collge of charleston already made my week anyways...

I didn't see this game, and honestly I don't know basketball all that well either, but I think certain types of infractions result in a throw-in from mid-court after the free throws.
