A quote from a recent Huckabee stump in which he advocates changing the constitution to be in line with his religious beliefs. This guy is creepier than 1408.
Trancecoachsays...

This guy and his intended supporters (a.k.a. fundamentalist Evangelicals) are nauseatingly, glaringly, incredibly braindead. Unfortunately, this footage was taken from too great a distance to be as identifiable as Huckabee as would be needed for this video to hurt him in the national polls.

ajkido: If most americans are like Mike Huckabee, then they are indeed horrible people, not just horrible americans. The constitution was written by people that were much smarter than whoever wrote the "word of the living god".

arrendeksays...

As far as I can tell, what he means is that we should amend the constitution to ban gay marriage, sodomy, abortion, etc rather than try to amend the bible to allow for these things. He firmly believes that the bible trumps the constitution as do his supporters.

This guy doesn't bother me (he's a pastor, what did you expect?). What bothers me is how far the (un)religious right(wrong) have infected the Republican party. What happened to the Goldwaters?

As you can see, Paul gets trounced and guys like this win primaries. It's a good thing there are a couple of more rational 'pubs around or this guy might actually have a shot. It's worrisome.

No kidding...I posted a Goldwater quote once while debating some religious right Christians and one of the responses was "why do I care what some left-wing liberal has to say?". Obviously someone who knows nothing about Goldwater and just shows how much the republican party has shifted.

BTW here is the quote...and it actually fits in perfect with this video...

--Barry Goldwater--

Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.

9058says...

Jesus fucking Christ did i just hear that right?! Its like the end of Jesus Camp where the head religious nut says Democracy is flawed because it wants equality and ultimately has to go. Is evolution working backwards? Hell I think there is a new theory in the works, either that or Darwin was wrong and from this clip he might of been

"I want everyone in this country to live according to my beliefs."

And a significant number of Americans and/or Christians are in total agreement with him. (I speak as a Christian who is in complete disagreement.)

I don't know how the rest of Americans can tolerate the current state of their country, I really don't. I mean, I don't know what they're supposed to do, but how much more insanity are they willing to take? It's cliche I know, but I just can't keep myself from thinking back to Nazi Germany.

Last I check, the constituition didn't require him to sodomize his fellow man & marry him all the while demanding the love child of his admin be aborted. I never cease to be amazed at the number of these idiots who read what the bible/god tells them what to do and then go and get all confused, think they are god and start telling other people what to do. Mike: You're not god. It is a personal code for you to follow, not dictate to others.

evil_disco_mansays...

Alrighty then, if we want to start amending the Constitution to fit the word of your god, let's take it all the way.

Don't forget the Old Testament! Here are some highlights...

- Anyone that commits adultery shall be stoned to death.

- Anyone caught telling a lie shall have their tongue cut off.

- Anyone caught stealing shall have their hands cut off.

Remember kids, freedom isn't free!

This man is too scary. Too bad this (and not to mention the stunt he pulled with the phone call he was pretending was God telling him that he picks Huckabee for president) will actually make him horrifyingly successful in the race. Because of this, and only because of this, is he even standing a chance in the primaries.

Thankfully, Stephen Colbert is doing a good job turning him into a joke in a lot of people's eyes. Trust me, Huckabee as president will make Bush seem bearable.

Hive13says...

If you find what he said anything but offensive to your intelligence and downright scary then you are a fool. This type of evangelical crap is acceptable in your church where I will never go, but as President of this country, where I have the freedom of religion or none at all, this is down right disgusting.

Advocating a constitutional amendment could never be treason. Treason is an umbrella term for other crimes such as espionage and conspiracy to assasinate people. There is no need to have a separate crime of treason on the books. An overbroad definition of treason is a sign of fascism. Outside of espionage and joining the regular army of an opposing nation, laws against treason are only enforced in fascist states. No one is born with a duty to support any government, or indeed any thing, except truth and justice.

However, Huckabee is an ignorant fool who should never be president. If he wins, I am moving to Norway.

jimnmssays...

A constitutional amendment in itself is not treason, but it sounds like he wants to do more than make a few amendments to the constitution. It sounds like he wants to get rid of the constitution and rewrite it to his interpretation of his god's word, which is essentially overthrowing the government, which is treason.

jwraysays...

That's code for "ban sodomy, force gays back into the closet, ban abortion, and make public school students pray", not overthrowing the government. It's creating a theocracy through democracy, like Iran and present-day Iraq. If people will believe anything their ministers and imams tell them and vote accordingly, what you have is an oligarchy/theocracy in democratic clothing.

MarineGunrocksays...

^Exactly. He wants a theocracy. He's an idiot, and he scares me. I'm saying this as a Christian.
I mean, whatever happened to church and state?

Not that there aren't good morals to be had, but you don't need to be Christian to have them.

To almost all the commenters above: Nice. Real nice. Just what we need, more fearful and intolerant knee-jerk reactions to other people's religious beliefs. Never mind trying to actually understand Huckabee's motivations or reasonings. Let's just call the people we disagree with scary and stupid and dangerous, after all, it's obvious that they are ill-intentioned and not worth hearing out. That's sure to bring world peace in a hurry! Our groupthink is better than theirs! Live in fear and animosity towards diversity!

When are you people gonna learn that you can't fight hate with hate, fear with fear, or intolerance with intolerance? Get a clue! Make a real effort to understand that which scares you and the hearts of the people behind it. Until you do that, you will never be any wiser, smarter or more loving than they are, and you might even be less so.

What? Oh I see...you probably didn't watch the video. These comments have nothing to do with just "people's religious beliefs" and have everything to do with these people trying to use the government to impose their "religious beliefs" on everyone.

I'm sure there is no one here that has a problem with Huckabee and his followers living by the Bible if that's what they want to do...no one is stopping them.

Not sure why you think no one here "understand Huckabee's motivations or reasonings" because it is exactly because we understand his motivation and reasonings that we find him and his followers scary.

BTW...in the context of someone using their religious beliefs to restrict "my freedoms" there is nothing wrong with hating hate, fearing fear, or being intolerant of intolerance.

Guardian-Xsays...

As a former Christian I still have a good moral backbone, as many of the teachings are universal, logical and reasonable. Just as almost all other religions have basic human truths which, when cut and pasted together, make a good doctrine for how to treat your neighbors. I remember Dawkins explaining how evolution supports Altruism. Being a good-natured human being (and even many animals act this way) is simply beneficial to survival. You scratch my back, I'll scratch your's. It's when violence and intolerance seep into these religions that you have to be afraid. And that fear started millennia ago.
