Ever wonder how they trim trees around power lines in Redneck Cultures?
Sketchsays...Why does this just feel like a Darwin Award waiting to happen?
phelixiansays...This is the stupidest use of a helicopter I've ever seen. I thought it was a joke post from the title of someone with a remote controlled helicopter using it to trim hedges. This is just plain wrong. So many better ways to do this.
leeweeksays...but think of the possibilities!!!!! a freaking massiv chainsaw, on a rope, hanging from a helicopter. what better to tear though downtown with? i mean cmon! trees?? i want to se this thing tear though a building.
bamdrewsays...this is pretty unbelievable. works like a charm. fast and effective. A team of only a few people could work through miles of power lines in no time.
Raytracesays...i remember that from a james bond movie. it cut his bmw in half. that was sweet.

Why do you see this as stupid. This is quite a common way. It's faster and safer than using a bucket truck. With the truck touching the ground, there is a greater risk of shock. With the helicopter in the air, there is no path to the ground for the electricity to take if the cable holding the blades comes in contact with the power lines. Also a lot of these high tension power lines are located in areas where there are no roads.
Helicopters are also used in power line mainenance.
Edit: Here's another video someone submitted about power line maintenance using helicopters.

deathcowsays...another job where if you lost your mind and wanted to go out in style, you could
rychansays...Youtube took the music away, but I still upvoted.
I can not believe this is actually standard operating procedure. It looks so dangerous. The helicopter is getting twisted and rocked violently. The saw could get snagged under a large branch / trunk and the helicopter would be in big trouble. This takes amazing pilot skill to swing this thing back and forth in a pendulum motion, it seems.
marinarasays...looks like a joke but i suppose people can't be bothered to get out of the car and walk anymore so it appears necessary i suppose after the health care bill it will save money because of the per employee tax
