Frank Zappa on Crossfire ... over 20 years ago!

In 1986, Frank Zappa appeared on CNN's Crossfire to discuss rock lyrics and censorship. He made a name for himself as a political force to be reckoned with after this terse segment.

It's fascinating to hear Zappa say that we were heading towards a fascist theocrasy... 20 years later and our country is being governed by the son of Reagan's vice-president. One need only watch Jesus Camp to see how the evangelicals are making a strong comeback.

Amazing stuff. Thanks for posting.

These sorts of videos make my blood boil, because I see all the perfectly logical arguments that the person in the right is making (in this case I would say that Zappa is 'right') and how they just bounce off the boneheadedness of those who just don't understand the larger picture of what they're advocating.

They just don't GET why it's bad for a government to be a censor and degree X word is allowed in a song and Y word isn't, that this song vs that song is good or bad. How it starts out as a bad idea with a small impact that a few bad words are disallowed in songs and snowballs to start including no mention of things that go against Christianity or the government themselves or anything that they deem to be 'bad'.

They don't get it and no amount of valid argument can turn them.

So it's incredibly frustrating... I'd love to see one of these sorts of ones where the one in the 'wrong' is actually converted... that'd make me happy.

Ladybug,

I was going to post this but my list is too large! I found it interesting while I watched this to recognize that society is censoring words today. It seems there are more words you can't say now than there were then. Zappa turns in his grave.

i, respectfully, disagree with you, silvercord ... if you watch any (american-based) nighttime sitcom ... they are able to say FAR more racey words than they were years ago ... i.e. bitch, slut, ass, etc ...

as for songs ... i'm still stuck in the 80's!!! lol so i can't answer that one ...

Favorite part is when Mr. Zappa knows a huge amount about the pastor who organized the rock music protest and was almost able to turn that Novak comment into a very strong argument for his side (before being interupted by the nazi). That argument being, who's to draw the line when some people think talking about Hinduism or astrology is obscene.

... thought i watched this on here before... guess it was somewhere else

Impressive to see how calm Frank remains with the relatively fierce attacks coming at him. I'd have expected at least a raised voice from even the coolest of heads.

And how was the opportunity for a "douchebag for liberty" tag missed?

I started listening to Frank Zappa when i was twelve, and i still listen to him regularly. He was a musical genius.
Even when the Nazi cut him off near the end there, he still kept his cool. Frank should have run for office. This is not the only video were he is bang on about the future of America and politics.
