Fishing for bicycles in the Netherlands

There are canals and a lot of bikes in my hometown of Utrecht, this is what happens. These boats go along the canals at least once a year.

Wow that's crazy. This just goes to show that a majority of people could care less about polluting the environment they live in. Quite often I see someone throwing a wrapper out of their car. It used to be really bad in America in the 70s. In the 80s stiff penalties were enforced and the threat of a $1000 fine stopped most people from littering finally. I'm sure there's all kinds of crap in the lakes and streams though. I've gone diving into a lake only to find a vehicle at the bottom of it rusting away, polluting the lake every second that it sat down there.

I still don't understand why people would dump their bikes in the river though... Is there nowhere they can properly dispose of them? Or does it cost money to do that?

BTW... I always love hearing Royal Hunt's version of Ave Maria. Good sift.

Pretty sad seeing all those bikes reduced to that state of gunk-hosting, rusing, bent-up pieces of garbage. I can't countenance bike theft, which I'm sure is the backstory of most of these sad, sad bicycles.
