Fallout 3 - Teaser Trailer

The newly released teaser for Bethesda's upcoming RPG. Apparently the entire video is done in-engine . . .

Does anyone truly think that the developers of Morrowind and Oblivion, who all say that they love the original Fallout games to death, are going to totally screw this up?

Sketchsays...

Jeez. I wasn't expecting No Mutant's Allowed type bashing here. Let's wait until they have some game play to show before we start we start criticizing it because it isn't the exact same type of game that we've been waiting in our vault-like parent's basement for 10 years to play.

Many of the NMA trolls are already bitching because they think the Power Armor looks like crap. Whatever.

Sketch, we aren't bashing it, we're just keeping a reserved excitement because we don't know what to expect. If we overhype ourselves, then we set ourselves up for a big letdown. That's what happened with me and Deus Ex 2. (Although to be honest, I didn't hate it as much as everyone else.)

No specific complaints have come up here, like how the "color tone is all wrong" or "it's set in Washington DC, not California," etc. That's the kind of thing to expect from nitpickers.

Also, as I recall, the Power Armor changed dramatically from Fallout 1 to Fallout 2, so there's no reason for them to complain.

Sketchsays...

Sorry. I'm just touchy about their bitching at NMA. I've been on the receiving end of their flame throwers and I found it to be disheartening and ludicrous. I hope for the best for the Bethesda team. I'm sure they have great things in store. I'm betting it's not going to be an isometric, turn-based RPG, but I'll be having a blast with it while the NMA forums will burn with undeserved hatred.

Worst fanbase ever!

waxwing_slainsays...

The Fallout community is like a delicate, irradiated flower that has been rudely trampled on...repeatedly...with cleats.
To call them the worst fanbase ever is unfair. Seeing the power and the glory that is Fallout given over to the people responsible for Morrowind is a fine enough reason to be upset. Not to say that Morrowind is bad, it's just like seeing the seed of Christ raised to adulthood by John Belushi or Redd Foxx....disconcerting.

It was done in-engine, but not in realtime...so who knows if that level of detail is what can actually be expected.

Still, I enjoyed Morrowind, and Oblivion to a lesser extent, and so long as this doesn't become "Oblivion with guns", I have high hopes.

The inevitable consolification fills me with fear, though.

Sylvester_Inksays...

Yeah, I forgot to mention that mysdrial. My bad.

The fact that it's being developed for console is my main reservation. I really hope it won't be a detriment, but . . .

gorillamansays...

My main reservation is that Bethesda has never made a game that had a single one of the qualities that made Fallout great. That and their graphics over gameplay approach to development. And the consoles thing.

boombapsays...

Deus Ex 2 was ill.

Fallout = my wettest of dreams + yeeeeesssssssssssssss!

Come on, even if it isnt as good as the first 2, who cares? It's still more fallouty goodness.

Sketchsays...

People seem to have this issue with Fallout being a very specific type of game. But it's more about the world and setting. It's a universe. It's an intellectual property, and they own it. They can do whatever the hell they want to with it, and people need to come to grips with that. Would an old school Fallout game be cool? Yeah. Would it sell to a mainstream audience and be profitable? Hell no.

Sylvester_Inksays...

Well, the guys at Bethesda are also huge Fallout fans, and judging by all the effort they made in putting fan-service into the cinematic, I think they're really devoted into making this a good game.

I enjoyed both Morrowind and Oblivion, though not as much as Fallout, obviously, and I think the main thing that will differentiate Fallout is the leveling and character customization. I think a lot of people have issues with the way you level in Morrowind/Oblivion because it requires you to repeat actions over and over to level, whereas with Fallout, you are rewarded for doing significant things and can use that reward (experience/leveling) to improve your character. Essentially, Fallout is a system of rewards, whereas Morrowind/Oblivion are more work-based. As long as Bethesda keeps this in mind, I think the game will do fine. (Though I'd like to see Fallout's traditional GURPS system in play.)

Plus when you go to a 3d perspective, you get a lot more options to explore around the area, and you can add that third dimension of height to your exploration. So it will be interesting to see where Bethesda goes with that.

Fallout 3 is using a modified version of the Oblivion Engine, so it's 1st and 3rd person only.
Bethesda has earned my respect as a developer... I have no reservations about them making this game. Oblivion was and remains a great game - particularly due to the endless modability of the game (which Bethesda has done it's best to embrace). I expect the same from FO3.
