Evolution of the Moon

YT: From year to year, the moon never seems to change. Craters and other formations appear to be permanent now, but the moon didn't always look like this. Thanks to NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, we now have a better look at some of the moon's history.

I thought the theory that the earth was formed when a Mars sized planetoid collided with the earth was the accepted one now? That it gave the earth it's current rotation speed, and explained why rock on the moon was the same as the earth...

That isn't in question, that event happened 4.5+ billion years ago, this takes place after that. This is the history of it after its formation.

Wasn't there also a theory that the moon collided with second smaller moon early in its formation and that accounts for the difference in geology on the different sides of the moon.

During a discussion on how long ago the dinosaurs lived someone made a great comment: we (people) really can't get our heads around how long ago 200-300 million years really is. A billion years? Forget about it.

They are launching a prove probe to investigate that hypothesis, but it can't really be called a theory at this point. It is purely based in mind stuff, not evidence at this point.
