I used to have a small Icom-R1 radio (like 13 yrs ago?) that received analog cell phones, that thing was FUN fun FUN!!! We were listening to a drug deal go down once where the guy gave a contact phone number over the air and was instructing someone on going to the airport to pick up the shipment. My buddy ran down the road to a payphone and called the dude and said "Going to the airport? Yeah well your contact is WEARING A WIRE..."

NMTS system that was widely used before GSM, at least across Europe, in the early 90's wasn't even coded so you could eavesdrop any phone in the vicinity (say 500m) with a standard Motorola radio or any other ham radio (freq. was in the 420-450 MHz range). you could also catch standard land line phone sets with a remote receiver unit (that was usualy in the kilo hertz range)
