NordlichReitersays...HAHAHA!
I'm (name here) and that's why I drink.
kymbossays...Wow, so many factual inaccuracies, so little time.
peggedbeasays...^ it's comedy. exaggerations = funny. facts = boooooooooorrrring. grow a sense of humor.
thinker247says...Please feel free to list every "factual inaccuracy," so I can ignore them.

Whatever, that's the same line 'news' people throw at guys like Jon Stewart. Moot.
kymbossays...Righto, calm down. The key reason he's wrong is that overpopulation is not occuring in developed countries. In fact, if not for immigration from developing countries, most advanced industrialised nations would now be experiencing declining populations. It's the developing world that has high birth rates. So rich couples having their 1.8 babies is not a significant cause of population growth. There's a clear link between increasing wealth and declining birth rates.
I like a lot of his work, but he's Doug Stanhope - he's no Bill Hicks.
Oh, and Jon Stewart does his research - he rarely has the facts wrong.
Jinxsays...At thats before we even talk about the perils of an aging population!
Come on. Pointing at a comic and saying "your suggestions simply are not feasible!". No fucking shit. Its still funny.
kymbossays...Wait. Comedians like Stanhope (and Jon Stewart, Bill Hicks etc) are great because they use facts to make you think - point out hypocrisies, that sort of thing. It's not that his suggestions aren't feasible, but that in this case he's got his facts wrong. Of course this reduces the impact of his comedy.
The other of his posted recently is much better: http://www.videosift.com/video/Doug-Stanhope-on-the-Fear-Spread-by-American-News
GenjiKilpatricksays...I'm with Kymbos on this one. Satire is funny when it's accurate.
It's best when there's no need to exaggerate the hilarity of the shortcoming in question:
Prius Warriors that have babies.
Stanhope is accurate that the media fails to mention birth-rate as means of carbon control.
Tho it skews the issue when Stanhope labels environmentally aware parents as hypocritical blowhards.
The birth-rate is not that the problem.
The rate of consumption is.
daxgazsays...while 1st world countries may not be increasing in population much, they do FAR more damage to the earth per person. So, he still has a point that is relevant everywhere. Take out one American, and it makes a lot bigger difference than taking out several people form a developing country.
rich_magnetsays...I think this is the study Mr. Stanhope is referring. The website screenshot in the video is of a news article about the study, not the study itself.

I'm reading it now...
johnald128says...it's hard to weigh up realistically. the greater the population the more minds able to work on the world's problems... the more people - the smaller the fraction of the population die in climate chaos.
not a popular way to look at it i know... but hell, anything we do or don't do as individuals is insignificant, compared to which alternative power sources us drones are supplied with by our governments.
worth bearing in mind but nothing to live your own life by..
ryanbennittsays...That's only if those more minds are suitably educated to acknowledge the existence of climate change and the need to tackle it. If instead they close their eyes, put their fingers in their ears and go lalala, then yeah, we're better off with 20 births in India than one birth in the US. Education could be the key though. Educated women tend to choose to use birth control and have fewer babies, including in less developed countries. Overcoming sexual discrimination and male dominance globally looks to be part of the solution.
Makes you think though. In a way this puts the Roman Catholic view on contraception at odds with the need for birth control in todays world. Does God not want mankind to survive? Seems apocalypse was part of the design after all...
Xaxsays...Wait, he's pro-abortion AND pro-abstinence? Whaaaa? And what's he staring at?
siftbotsays...Tags for this video have been changed from 'Doug Stanhope, abortion, newswipe, carbon footprint, prius, douchebag' to 'Doug Stanhope, abortion, newswipe, carbon footprint, prius, voice of america' - edited by xxovercastxx
