Dan Savage on Sex, Religion & Bullying

From Dan's blog: I don't usually post my own interviews... but this one is giving the religious right fits, so I'm making an exception. Also: I usually credit Sam Harris, author of Letter to a Christian Nation (and other books), when I go off about how the Bible got slavery wrong. Harris doesn't connect that error to human sexuality in Letter, but the observation—if the authors of the bible got the easiest moral question there is wrong, what else did they get wrong?—was his, and I cite it, and plug Sam's book up, frequently when I speak at colleges. But somehow I brain farted it for the cameras.

Dan Savage is such a great guy. I've been a fan of his column for years, but this recent YouTube campaign is really something special. The It Gets Better campaign is one of the most moving, if not the most moving, grass roots uses of modern technology that I know of. It is so awesome to see a movement fueled by average folks be so obviously right and powerful that celebrities and world leaders have to scramble to catch up to it.

He should, and I'm sure he will eventually, get an award for his work that he doesn't have to buy from Ann Lander's estate.

I'm definitely a critic of some of the things Dan Savage says. His attitudes about bisexual and transgender folk are... not terribly helpful, for instance. (A bisexual man who happens to end up in a long-term relationship with a woman is suddenly /not/ bisexual anymore? Really? And if he ends up with another man he's just gay? Sorry, Dan, doesn't work that way.)

The It Gets Better campaign, however, is just fantastic.

Huh. I never read anything from him saying someone is not bisexual if they are in a long term monogamous relationship. Of course, I haven't read everything he has said. However, of what I have read, I never picked up that message. Do you have a link easily available? I'd love to read what you are talking about.

And yeah, the It Gets Better project is stellar.
