Craig T. Nelson "I'm going to quit paying my taxes!"

Craig T. Nelson shows some balls on Glenn Beck. He's tired of how our representative government is spending our money.

Cool idea, but I think "taxation without representation" isn't a valid accusation, since he presumably did get to vote, so he is represented, as much as any democratic citizen is entitled to be. the "without representation"-bit is only when the king takes your money and spends it in a way you don't like, I think.

blankfistsays...

True. Taxation without representation was meant for the large percentage of colonists without a representative vote in Parliament. I think Nelson is skewing the principle behind that saying to mean the money he is forced to pay is being used in areas he disagrees with, and therefore does not represent him.

But, yeah, not the same.

snooznsays...

Wow, could Nelson be any more dense? He clearly doesn't understand the meaning of "taxation without representation" and he completely missed the point of Chayefsky's "Network." Is Howard Beale really his role model here? Really?? And the whole "what other way could little ol' me possibly protest these policies I don't like?" Well, let's see, you're a celebrity, bud! Not a huge one, but you sure can get your opinions out in front of more folks than the rest of us. I may have heard of a celebrity or two who uses their fame to publicize their pet cause. But no, this idea of firing people up to not pay their taxes as a way to show their love for veterans and teachers sounds absolutely brilliant. And does anyone really believe Nelson is going to go through with this and sit in jail as a Republican martyr? Gah, the idiocy level has reached the point that I AM MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE! Oh, sorry, I meant to steal this quote from "Network:"
"[FOX is] not a respectable network. [They're] a whorehouse network, and [they] have to take whatever [they] can get."

I wonder if he said the same thing about paying for the Iraq war.. which had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11 or even US national security. The $1+ trillion dollar war and counting.

While I think these bailouts are pure bunk, akin to nothing but corporate welfare, we have to keep the wider perspective. Government, no matter who it is run by.. is going to screw over the taxpayer in preference of corporate interests. Whether those interests potential lucrative oil contracts in Iraq, to bailing out large campaign contributors that screw over the US people and economy out of pure unadulterated greed and criminality, for the most part legalized (or ignored) by our government until it was far too late to correct.

Yet.. where are the complaints of our military and war budget. Take a look at how much that is costing the taxpayer on a year to year basis. It'll make this bailout look like child's play.

As long as we keep responding to any minor threat with bombs and missiles, then we're going to need to maintain that arsenal. As soon as we start using our brains before our trigger finger, we may have a better, more sustainable, more affordable, national defense strategy. At the moment it isn't national defense. It is national offense.

Lets remove the government and create two administrative corporations - DemCorp and GOPCorp. Each year you can subscribe to services from one or other.

Both must contribute funding to primary services. Roading, parks, etc,

The GOP corp can fund border defense, military campaigns. The Dem Corp can fund universal healthcare, environmental protection.

But you have to show your membership card to get treatment.
If you go to a hospital and your DemCorp - it's free. If your a GOP and you go to a hospital you will be charged the full price.
"IF" there is a direct invasion of the US, then Dem's will be charged an additional fee.

Just for fun, I read the crawl this time.
I wonder if the juxtaposition of text with the interview is ever planned or if its mostly just random news bites...

Yes I didn't agree with the illegal war I paid for. Or the illegal and oppressive military occupation of Gaza that I'm paying for. However I do know that some of my money goes to pay little old widows who live across town, or towards the thousands of starving children increasing everyday in America. I don't agree with what the government does with most of my money, but I'm not going to take it away from the people who actually need it and in some cases would die without it.

geo321says...

He didn't mention anything he would like the government to cut funding on. Only programs he wants funded more. Asking people to stop giving the government money until they spend more money doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
