Consequences of drinking and driving

Severely disfigured in a drunken driving crash four years ago, Jacqui is courageously lending her story and her face to a statewide anti-DWI campaign in Texas in hopes that her experience will deter people from drinking and driving.

I had to find out more about this:
"In June 2001 Reggie Stephey was convicted of two counts of intoxication manslaughter for the deaths of Jacqui’s two friends. He was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined $20,000."

Everyone should see that video. I cant imagine the kind of inner strength that girl has.

how dose locking this guy up help ore change anything ? yah its bad people died and yah its bad some girl got messed up. but at the same time the guy who was drunk from what i can gather wasn't a repeat offender how dose locking him up improve the situation at all? the only thing you can relay argue is it survs as an example to other people whoever thats slightly flawed because in this case it seems that the guy was probably drunk when he made the desisoin to get in his car and so was unable to make a decent desicoin.

the solution is to have a mandatory 10 year ban if you are in a car and u fail an alchole test. if you repeat offend then u r pertinently band and face a large time of community service.

the whole idea of locking people up as some kind of punishment to some how get back at people who died is so stupid. only time you should lock a person up is if thay are a danger to society (ie repeat offending wont stop regardless of help ) . all the other people should have to do a combination of jobs and get help geting there lives back on track.

Westy, the idea of locking people up is not to "get back at people". It's used as 1) a punishment and 2) a deterrent. So...let's see if I get your logic straight. No punishment for killing someone while driving drunk; only a 10 year ban for failing a breathalyser and I'm going to assume that this stands for whether or not a fatality was involved.

So with that logic, I can get drunk, accidentally kill your mom with say...oh...a butcher knife and that just means I have to eat with forks and spoons for the next 10 years, right?

In terms of protecting society, clearly, this guy isn't a killer who needs to be removed from the civilian population, just from the roads. The jail time is 100% deterrent to others, and one I heartily approve of for anyone caught DUI. What I'm not clear about is why killing someone while driving drunk gets a higher sentence than not killing someone while driving drunk. Both are criminal, but the difference is just luck.

It serves the people, messenger. Deterrents must be obvious to protect others. Just revoking the man's license isn't deterrent enough for others. The consequences should be more severe in my opinion.

And just WHO gets the money from the 22k fine? The state? After this guy serves his time, he should be paying support to this woman for the rest of his life.

Alcohol is at the centre of every broken home, beaten wife, abused kid and almost every fatal road accident.

It is the most dangerous drug on the planet, it's everywhere we look, on TV, on billboards, on street corners and in schools, it shapes an ego-driven culture of male dominance and violence.

And yet harmless psychedelics and plant neuro-chemicals that have been symbiotic with us for MILLIONS of years have been banned for the last hundred or so years by this same ego-driven male dominator culture.

This DUI guy is a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself.

@swampgirl: The comment you replied to was about execution, which I believe is punishment (righteous vengeance to make the victims feel better, which I do not support), as opposed to deterrent (preventing other people from doing the same thing, which I do support), a distinction which videosiftbannedme made in this thread.

In my other comment two above that one, you'll see I am fully in favour of imprisonment as a visible deterrent.

This is a really touchy subject for me. Contrary to popular belief. These things happen all the time with no alchohol involved. Cars are VERY dangerous and no one seems to take them seriously. We all need to find the middle ground between "Maniac" and "sunday driver who doesn't pay attention". One of my best friends was driving home from a party a while ago when a girl doing 95mph jumped the center line and hit him head on. His BAL was .08 right at the legal limit for Washington state. Long story short. She's paralized for the rest of her life. And he owes her 6 Million. The report says he was doing 50 in a 55.
