James Roesays...Should be noted the full version of this video can be found here, since youtube only allows 10 minutes to be uploaded

daphnesays...WOW! Good for Colbert. How can you pass up an op like that?
I'm sure his speech was thoroughly checked before he spoke, so I believe that it was the Bush Administration's plan to have Colbert's speech go like that. I'm sure it's a tactic to "side" with the naysayers to downplay their power. It's a sneaky tactic, and I hope it backfires.
I read the reports about how Bush was not happy, but you can see at the end he is smiling, as is Laura Bush. And he left because it was the end, not because he was mad. The press makes it seem otherwise. I wish journalists wouldn't report incorrect things like that. It leans toward bias.
James, the link you gave didn't work for me, but I found this wmv:
http://movies.crooksandliars.com/WH-Dinner-Colbert.wmv
or this QT:
http://movies.crooksandliars.com/WH-Dinner-Colber.mov
The Press Secetary thing is brilliant.
daphnesays...Grrr...the QT link doesn't work, and the wmv only works in IE.
This QT works in FF, but it is a link to the page in IE.

I can't believe they let him speak at this. I love it - but I'm surprised. I bet after this, W. said to his handlers "who the f*ck was that guy? And don't put me in the same room with him again, next time, book Jeff Foxworthy."
Leekolassays...It's tradition at White House Correspondent dinners for the president to make fun of himself and his administration. Clinton did it, Bush Senior did it...
I don't see why you are all surprised W didn't buck tradition. :?
sfjockosays...Leekolas - I think in part because the current POTUS is known to be incapable of self-criticism or self-deprecation, and is to avoid situations where dissenting voices may be heard. Though he was open enough to joke about his inarticulateness, criticizing his *policies* and highlighting his hypocricy seems beyond his tolerance threshold.
That's just the impression he gives, the bubble boy. That's part of the reason I think many of us were suprised and tittilated to see Stephen do his full schtick.
deadfoxsays...Did you also see the bush imitation guy video? It happened just before colbert got up to the podium, and was MUCH funnier!! I think it's here somewhere...

joshbsays...I've watched The Colbert Report since its debut, and I must admit that I didn't really catch on to what his whole shtick is about for about a week. I think a lot of people at this event reacted to him with a similar sense of befuddlement. It's actually brilliant satire. I was glad to see him get the chance to use it in a situation like this.
