The development of the Buran began in the early 1970s as a response to the U.S. Space Shuttle program. While the Soviet engineers favoured a smaller, lighter lifting body vehicle, the military leadership pushed for a direct, full scale copy of the double-delta wing Space Shuttle, in an effort to maintain the strategic parity between the superpowers.

^I'm not sure about that. I think mine was first, although I discarded it later cause it only got 6 votes. I think that's why I pasted the link to mine in that other post a couple of days back and then ant promoted it from my discarded list. I wish I could see the original date somewhere... *discuss - we've got two copies of a russian space shuttle flying around
