Bruno 'Interviews' Ron Paul

Scene from the movie - I dedicate it to blankfist :)
burdturglersays...

It's a cute clip but it's also an awful cam of a film that is in theaters right now. I could post stuff like this all day long but don't because I assumed there were rules against it. Sorry Edd! I hate to be the asshole here, but this is the kind of stuff that will get the Sift in hot water. Are we allowing this sort of thing now?

There are no rules or sift guidelines against this, burdy - it's not an entire movie (34.4. http://www.videosift.com/faq-en.php#posting_guidelines). Furthermore it's definitely not the first nor the last clip like it, and if any authorities have a problem with it, they should take it up with the site that hosts the video or the uploader there, not the ones that have the embed (which is for all intents and purposes merely a link). Honestly, I'm quite baffled as to why you did this. I'll *return it for now, but if you really think it should be discussed further, feel free to * discuss it again, and I'll happily wait for input from others.

If this clip is allowed then that means any clip of any video is allowed regardless of copyright. This thing isn't even on dvd yet. It's a (shitty) cam of a movie in theaters right now. What makes that OK? Its duration? Let's avoid the powers that be focusing there attention here and at least wait until movies leave the cinema, for fucks sake, before posting them.

I would like a clear answer from dag on this before it's returned, because like I said .. I could embed better quality and full length movies with a flick of the wrist. Posting cams isn't complicated. They just shouldn't be here.

I'm "baffled" about how links to content equals a violation of copyright too, but that didn't stop the pirate bay from getting nailed.

I'm on the fence here, and I want to just return it and hope it gets buried. I know that stuff gets posted here everyday that isn't allowed, and we work hard to make sure it stays available through the dead pool etc .. but there is something about cams and the fact that these movies are at the beginning of their revenue streams that makes them particularly subject to infringement complaints.

spoco2says...

I just think that any and all cams are horrible.

I don't even watch them as a 'preview' as they have to be one of the absolute worst ways to see something.

As for the legality, well it's iffy isn't it.

At least 80% of the stuff on here would be copyright infringement, and to say that this is worse because of how early in the lifecycle of the property has some merit, except that I bet you wouldn't say the same if it were a rip of a 'screener' dvd and indistinguishable from an actual clip from a dvd.

How does one define how this is different from other clips in movies?

I'm not even going to watch it due to the issue of quality, and I find it just distasteful that someone went into the theater with a camera to video the movie... as apposed to getting hold of a screener dvd that was handed to someone and making a copy of it... seems less premeditated or something to me.

Dunno.

Just don't like cams, never have, never will

burdturglersays...

I would say the same for a screener actually. Or a silver, R5 or any telesync, telecine etc. I have seen some great cams. The best have been up there with R5 quality, nice direct line audio etc .. but all of that isn't the issue as far as I'm concerned. Cams are cams and you get good and bad. The problem I have is I think studios are more aware of how things work now and publicly sharing cam footage is just asking for problems, even if we're not hosting it.
If it's cool with dag and the rest then great! I will be embedding tons of great shit!

Eh, I just wanted to make a blankfist-tease out of this, but if it sets a precedent for the guidelines at least it'll have been something worthwhile, as well.

As far as cams go, I hate them, too. The TV or movies that I watch I only go for 720p or better. But the video quality itself is beside the point, I guess (since it's concerned only as far as a measure of overall quality, so if it stinks, it's as good a reason as any to warrant a simple downvote). So thanks for elaborating, burd, because now I understand what you were getting at all along. I guess we'll just have to wait till dag's online, which afaik should be any minute now.

blankfistsays...

If you rip a DVD and put it on YouTube, is it not also copyright infringement? It's the same thing. Or if someone records a TV show and posts it online, is that not copyright infringement?

What about these you posted?

This video is no different than anything else that gets sifted here. It doesn't go against the site rules, so I say *return.

I'm sorry to go conspiracy nut over this but isn't this a very directed attack at Ron Paul's image. I mean this man is trying to make a huge change in US monetary system [edit: actually to change who controls the monetary system] and here he is, mocked in a cheap movie.
And I'm not even American ....

I freaking hate the way we ended making fun of serious business. I mean, yeah, it's ok to make fun, but only fun? we'll never achieve anything like this.
The psychological result of this is the social apathy imho.

I would really appreciate more than just one person summarily returning this based on their opinion.
I'd like to hear what dag has to say about it but barring that I'd at least like to get some community discussion which is why I hit the discuss button.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag.(show it anyway)

I tend to agree that we are not the aribiters for these kinds of clips. Although the answer may seem obvious- I can imagine viral marketers using shaky web cam screen caps for guerilla astroturfing of a release. *return

Sigh. Stop being so sensitive all the time, burdy. You have to understand how frustrating it is to have you hopping around the site like a hall monitor. You kept discussing this vid because you were taking the returns personally even when this video obviously wasn't violating any rules of the site.

Drop it, burdy. Everything is cool.

No, asshole.
I discussed it once. Edd returned it. He was the submitter of the video so I wanted a less biased opinion. You took it upon yourself after only one other person responded to return it again. So I discussed it again because I wanted more input. Pretty simple, although I imagine it was frustrating that you didn't instantly get your way.

I know you spend a lot of time following me around the Sift, watching and voting on my every post, posting multiple videos with my name in the tags or title etc .. but really .. you have to let it go blankfist. We can never be.

burdturglersays...

There's a real pattern with you. I've seen you do it to KP and other people here. If anyone reveals anything at all to you, in a blog post, a comment .. anything .. you try to use that against them to be cruel and make yourself look smart. It's really sad actually.
