Baghdad Raid (8:14)

Farhad2000says...

A day after the 1st Brigade Combat Team (BCT) moved against the airport, Colonel David Perkins, commander of the 2nd BCT, had driven his ... all » powerful formation against the Iraqi forces south of the city in the vicinity of Objective Saints. This was the intersection of Highway 8 from the south and Highway 1 running east and west. After hard fighting, the 2nd BCT secured Objective Saints, and on 5 April, had launched Task Force 1-64 Armor on a spectacular "Thunder Run" deep into the center of Baghdad and then hack out west to airport.

Major General Buford C. Blount III. commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, wanted to increase the pressure on the regime even more, and to do that he again chose the 2nd BCT. He and COL Perkins developed a plan to attack out of Objective Saints against the heart of Saddam's government. The commander's intent was to demonstrate his ability to operate large-scale armored and mechanized forces deep within the capital city, thereby disproving the claim that U.S. forces were unable to penetrate Baghdad and to put unbearable pressure on the regime.

Good call on the blog, theo.

I watched this posting all the way through. I'm a fairly consistent downvoter of the war-pornography that gets posted on a fairly regular basis. I don't put this video in the same basket with that shit. This is reality- the reality of war is killing and dying. I think it is important, for posterities' sake, that we have an unfiltered record available of just what war is, and why it must be avoided at all costs. My 2 cents: put it back in the queue, and let the masses decide.

Wow, no kidding on that video, deathcow. Our governments (I'm Canadian) are sending young men to foreign countries to kill other young men, and in turn to be killed by them. Vids like the one posted here, and the one you link to, are a pretty raw depiction of the business of killing- with no bullshit about "Honour" and "Justice"- it's just killing. Maybe watching stuff like this ought to be a requirement of citizenship.

Now, on another, but related topic, just what is it with Americans in planes killing their allies? I mean seriously, it's beginning to be a fucking habit.

Farhad2000says...

I agree with The Real Blankman, that's why when I posted this video it wasn't one of those let-the-bodies-hit-the-floor-violent ones... I believe anyone going into ROTC or any other training program should watch stuff like this. To knock some sense into them, since I have alot of firends who are willing to go because of the violent, adventure being a soldier they willl think they'll have.

Farhad2000says...

Well it's not about spoiling the party at all, I like the discussion that such topics raise. You take a very altruistic stance towards this, I used to be on your side very much so. I too believed that conflict should be avoided at all costs and that there are always better solutions to any issues that may arise.

However, seeing my own country slide into a military dictatorship, with the goverment actively engaged in wholesale imprisonment of voices that don't follow the military junta and finally one may having the army march out and just spray automatic gunfire into a anti-goverment protest made that all change. When talks fail, when there is no other way. Force will be met with force. That's the ideal situation, like World War 2, when there was no choice but to resist. Though in this gray world of ours that doesn't hold true anymore.

Though don't get me wrong, I don't support the sham that is the War on Terror. The whole idea of a war on terror is ridiculous, you're creating a phantom enemy out of an organization that US intelligence gives too much credit too. Inciting violence in the middle east will polarize you against the Islamic majority, especially when Bush went so far as to quote God countless times. The american goverment is adeptly creating it's own enemies.

I'll stop now. I can go about the moral and philisophical ramifications of war and conflict in the 21st Century forever...

if the current politicians have their way, war and conflict in the 21st century may indeed be forever.

It's like no one has ever read a history book or 1984. Even TV like History Channel and Discovery are pumping out endless war propaganda like it's shark week. We gave this country over to corporate interest, and now we have to endure whatever they think is in their interest. Consumers are all they care about, and most unemployed people still find a way to shop at WalMart.

Farhad2000says...

That is true JoeDirt, but the thing that strikes me is that people who work in corporations never realise what harm they may be causing. Because for them they exist as seperate entities from the corporate structure, however in legal terms are corporation is considered a person, who can own land and propoerty, and is the one liable for damages (e.g. Exxon Valdez). But how can you hold a building accountable? How does a corporation care about say enviromental or other external social costs? This is something that needs to be changed in regards to law, the board of governors should be held accountable. I find it so ridiculous, that one can plead the 5th when dealing with Enron... I'd love to commit a murder leave little evidence and then plead the 5th.

Discovery Channel and Histroy Channel really have all of a sudden become major proponents of conflict with endless shows like Dogfight, Iraq Most Dangerous, and countless other programs.

The last couple of votes are often the hardest to get...

and hey, the moment History Channel started airing reruns of Tour of Duty and JAG, they should've just renamed it the Military History and TV Series Channel to be more accurate...

It wasn't the video that impressed me, but the commentary that it inspires.

I've found threads like this interesting. Perhaps it's a voting philosophy developing here. I may or may not be moved to speak about a video or be particularly impressed by it, but if that video stirs people to debate well over it...it's worth keeping around.
