Pretty good for pre-battlestar sci-fi. Episodes can be rather episodic at times, and the characters are always a bit stiff and predictable but there are some really good overall story arcs, and a couple of lines that are my favorite in life.

MaxWildersays...Babylon 5 is the gold standard of blending story arc and episodic television. It was written from the start to last five years. Some of the scenes and characters are burned into my mind, but it has been so long. I really need to watch it again. I'm sure the CGI is dated now, but at the time it was fun.
You can't even compare this with Battlestar "makin' it up as we go" Galactica. Bablyon 5 also didn't make you want to slit your wrists every damn episode. It could make you laugh as well as cry. That's what good writing is.
One thing that was really sad was the cancellation and station change between seasons 4 and 5. The main story arc was abbreviated and wrapped up in season 4 because nobody knew if season 5 would even happen. Though tragic, season 5 still had some amazing episodes, with character moments and a story arc that looked almost as if it was planned all along.
