BYU "Free Speech Zone"... wtf is this country coming to

http://www.byualternativecommencement.com/
On April 4, 2007, anti-Cheney protesters at Brigham Young University were told to surrender their protest signs and go home. One protesting student brought this up to the president of BYU, who basically told the student to go screw himself.
4 more days until alternative commencement if they can pull it off

I commend the students who organised this protest. That said, what did they expect from a university that is owned by the mormon church? They do not promote free thought, they promote obedience.

It is nice, however, to see that they have finally found a use for the Pacific Islanders within their religion.

For more info on the wonderful treatment of Islanders by the church, look up the farming community of Iosepa, in beautiful skull valley utah, home of a future high level nuclear waste dump.

"Free speech zone" is just another Luntzian (not Orwellian, according to Luntz himself) relabeling of terms from unpopular to more acceptable. "Free speech" and "zone" don't describe or imply the same thing. "Global warming" is now the less ominous "climate change". "Estate Tax" is now "death tax". School "vouchers" are now school "scholarships", and "school choice" is now "parental choice in education". An oldie, "pro-choice" or "pro-abortion", depending on which side of the issue you fall. Republicans can dismiss an "environmentalist", yet champion "conservationists" who may have the same goal. Some describe "Free speech zones" as "free speech cages". To me, it just means every where else is a "Freedom restricted area", or a "controlled speech zone".

This shouldn't be happening in this country.

... USA is SO fucked... This "free speech zone" crap makes me want to join the NDP in Canada or SOMETHING. Seeing all this happen to our closest neighbors makes me want to make DAMN sure nothing like this ever happens in Canada.

Every week, twice a week, food not bombs has a peaceful little anarchist gathering in this city. I've only been to a few, and I definitely agree with SOME of what they are saying, but maybe not their politics. But god damn does it make me fucking happy that it exists, that they are having their assemblies, giving away food, and nobody is stopping them. Nobody is hassling them. They are free to promote whatever political beliefs they want.

I was puzzled the last time I went to one, a few weeks ago. How can it be, I wondered, that something that I largely disagree with can make me so happy? I think I've determined the answer. What makes me happy is the freedom that it represents. The freedom that still exists in Canada.

The freedom that the USA seems to be so fucking low on, of late.

keep in mind that they are on private property. the guy in the video said that if it were 50 years ago they wouldve been kicked out. and its probably true for today too. i can get you kicked out of my party if i dont like you, no questions asked

but that aside, it only shows what kind of institution they are that they are willing to demote free speech like this where one comes to study and liberate their mind not to be restricted as such

Private property...nuff said. This isn't giving up any freedoms. Stop with the "what is America coming to" bullshit.

Nothing, absolutely NOTHING is stopping these students from protesting outside the campus...out in the open...on public property.

It's like someone coming into my house to protest and me kicking them out, all the time them screaming "you're violating my free speech rights!". Give me a break.

I can't stand this president, or this administration or this idiotic war that monkey got us into...but come on.

Goofball,

You go ahead and try to protest on public property. You'll find that many of the rules are changed. If it is a meeting, say of WTO, G8, RNC, DNC, just about anything really, there will be offcial "Free Speech Zones". They have changed laws. It is now illegal to not show an ID or give your real name and address in many states. Wearing a mask laws have been revived (clan based laws) to prevent protestors from hiding their appearance from police videocams. Just about anywhere there is a large march, you'll find police waiting for you to step onto the road (assuming you don't have an official permit to close down a street). Signs not made of paper are illegal (like the wood stake that hold up your sign).

This is a college campus in the USofA. There are probably 2000 more protest videos showing that Free Speech isn't anymore.

The right to peaceful assembly is gone. I could cite thousands of examples, but the mere fact that you write like this and dismiss it is telling. You don't even realize what you are missing.
