And up... up... how does it do that?

The Airbus A380 takes off at the annual Bourget air show. The Airbus ascends only gradually at airport takeoffs, but the Airbus can climb much more quickly than most of us realize. What makes this clip so bizarre is how slow the Airbus seems to be moving... you're left wondering, "how can such a massive piece of metal not just fall out of the sky?" Impressive aerodynamic engineering.

Thanks for the clarifications, honkytonk! I kind of suspected something like that, but you so rarely see these birds at their full capacity...

And thanks for the channel add, calvados!

I'm unsure of what's supposed to be impressive about this. Yes, it's bigger than an average airplane, but "Woohoo, it can take off!" I should hope an airplane can take off, climb, then bank. This isn't the Spruce Goose here.

Pretty much a requirement for getting out of the John Wayne Airport in Orange County, CA, where they take off steeply due to laws that have been enacted to keep the noise down for the rich people that live in the flight paths. In most other cities, it's a lower class near the airports who can't afford to buy such laws.

Which part am I suppose to be impressed by again?

I was in the Air Force and watched C5's take off all the time. It looked like you could almost run along side of them when they were taking off....looked like they were hardly moving. I think it has to do with the size and the perspective.

Jones, in the air force, this is common practice. Most consumer flight pilots use far less excessive movements to provide a comfortable ride for the passengers. I say most cause i've been on flights that feel just like what I saw here... high verticle climb + sharp turning to quickly get on the right heading and gtfo. Course I'm sure many airports, alot of pilots would much rather do just that, gtfo!

Arrendek has nailed it -- passengers never see or experience such a steep takeoff which is why, for the layman, this is very impressive. The Airbus in particular flies so slowly at these airshows that it looks like it would drop right out of the sky if it went any slower.
