America's Got Talent - 11 year old girl ROCKS the stage

Awesome performance - the next Joss Stone perhaps. Here's the original - Jennifer Holiday singing the same song, also awesome: http://www.videosift.com/story.php?id=4662

I think though, that the same criticism that people make of Joss Stone applies here. The Apollo Theater has girls like this who come on every amatuer night, but because they are black girls from the projects, they don't get near the play. People are amazed by this 1 - because she is an amazing singer, and 2 - because she's white.

Hmm, if you forget for a minute that she's a little girl, once you get past the old Mariah-style vocal-showing-off it wasn't a very good performance. I don't see why she should be favoured just cause she has a freakishly grownup singing voice.

After all, that gimmick's only going to last a few more years.

Haha I loved the judges comments though, it reminded me of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho - "I SAID, do not wear that outfit again. Wear a dress or skirt or something... and high heels, I like high heels"

HorsSujetsays...

What's wrong with her hair, her clothes, and her shoes? Can't a girl sing without having to become a sex symbol?

I see your point Parra. The song doesn't really impress me so much, only the fact that she's eleven. But with that kind of precocious talent, and so much control over so intimidating an instrument of a voice at such an early age, she might blossom into something really phenomenal.

Or bomb when she hits her teens and can't handle the attention. A lot of child performers have miserable childhoods. So much so that this can be a curse as much as a blessing.

Fat black women (and those who can sing like them) are the Death Stars of talent competitions. Just put them in a glass case and set them aside to win later, no one needs more octave-bursting BS about love. More freaks and weirdos!

maudlinsays...

But what large black women have won or even placed highly in singing competitions? I can't think of any from [fill in the country] Idol, Star Search, or anything similar. In fact, large black women may wow the critics and some parts of the marketplace, but it's rare that they win popularity contests against the conventionally cute. Big black guys (see: Ruben Studdard) get cut more slack than similarly sized women.

Anyway, this little girl has a huge voice and a level of control that is incredible for someone of her age. But she's too young to deliver the emotion of a song. She's learned to emulate the sound of a deeply emotive style of music, but right now, she's all surface. She may yet turn into an awesome singer, but she's currently just a bundle of raw talent waiting to develop into something more.

dag already posted the link to Jennifer Holliday, but I'll repeat it here: http://www.videosift.com/story.php?id=4662

Scroll to about 3:30 to hear the beginning of the same song.

She has a nice tone...but what did it was precisely the way she was dressed. They were expecting a "nobody" because she was dressed like a "nobody." The shock was what surprised them. If she had come out with attitude, they wouldn't have been so impressed.

I agree...she does a nice mimic. But she'd better watch out or she'll get vocal nodes...her chords aren't developed enough yet. Remember Charlotte Church? A beautiful voice destroyed by over-exposure.

But I gotta give it to her for the drama. She played the part right.

well she certainly is loud, and has some impressive control at times.

I agree with Daphne; the brit doesn't understand that some of her appeal is that of a 'sleeper'... something that comes along and is awesome in defiance of first impressions.
