Ahmadinejad criticism of Israel sparks UN walkout en masse

This is what happens when you hold an anti-racism conference and let a holocaust denier be one of the first speakers. I understand the UN needing to be inclusive, in particular for an anti-racism conference, but come on already. If you want a consensus on stopping racism, don't ask racists to come and help.

Behold the only world leader to criticise Israel, now watch him be slaughtered by the media.

It's not about criticizing Israel. It's about the anti-racism conference! The declaration they are discussing from Durban says plenty about stopping racism, but the ONLY specific reference to ANY nation is ISRAEL! Israel is being singled out as the ONLY example of a racist nation. Not even Darfur or North Korea are mentioned for pity sake. Singling out Israel alone for criticism IS RACIST and hqas no place at an anti-racism conference!

And of course you seem to be content to ignore that these comments come from a holocaust denier as well. What is it that makes your hate for Israel so intense that you would ignore all this?

Ahmadinejad is the worst kind of person to transmit this kind of information. What Israel does is inexcusable, but he is not the right person to be allowed to say this because it totally detracts from the case with his political background with regards to this issue.

But then again its been over 60 years and miles of lines have been written about this and nothing has been done. Israel seeds it's own destruction in the long run.

More importantly still why can't a conference about stopping racism be held WITHOUT national leaders needing to single out a single nation that is nearly 80% Jewish?

Excellent way to win a battle of ideas, walk away because you don't like what you're hearing. And yeah i've heard the arguments about rolling around in the mud with pigs etc. but how can we expect others (the ones we want to convince we're right and they are wrong) to listen us when we aren't prepared to listen them regardless of whether it is even possible to reason with them. It sets a bad example to those that could be swayed that we won't listen regardless of your point of view eliminating the possibility that they may end up agreeing with us.

So he denies the holocaust happened, doesn't that make him as fucking sick and twisted and corrupt and crazy as every single person on this planet in charge of a country?

Jews are not a race. They are a ethnoreligious group.

What you said could mean that anti-Christian rhetoric can be considered racist because its leveled against Christians.

Fucking politicians.

"LOOK AT US CAMERAS! WE ARE MORALLY OUTRAGED BY THIS OUTRAGEOUS FUCKERY!"

Also: A conference about racism. I wonder what world changing ideas were exchanged. An ad campaign on the side of buses perhaps. "RACISM IS BAD, AND RACISTS SHOULD FEEL BAD!".

Goddamn fucking politicians. Curse them and their faggotry.

People started walking out when he said Isreal had a racist government with regard to the occupied territories - which is hard to argue against - The UN itself has officially condemned Israel for those issues. I guess the folks that walked out wanted safer racism to talk about at the anti-racism conference.

Also, if wikipedia is right it seems like he's more of a right-to-question-the holocaust person than he is a holocaust denier.

You do realize that an entire working group for the Durban agreement being discussed here was dedicated to preventing discrimination against Islam?

And to point out the obvious, the distinction between ethno-religious group and race does NOT justify discrimination against the Jewish people. To even discuss something like whether the holocaust was committed against the Jewish race or merely the Jewish people is to miss the point entirely!

The thing is, we HAVE listened to them, we've argued with them and evidence IS still with us. This wasn't a debate, it was a speech and I completely stand by anyone who walked out on the basis that a lot of what he is spouting is deeply and simply sectarian. It's been heard before and it's as wrong now as it was then.
