Whats the purpose of the lasers apart from looking really cool in a time lapse?

They shoot the laser up, keep a continuous picture of the laser dot in the sky going, study atmospheric distortion of the laser spot, and then correct the shape of the mirror continuously to cancel out the atmospheric conditions... i.e. they increase resolution a lot.
