7 years, 7 mass shootings, 7 distraught speeches

How utterly frustrating it must be, in a position of power, to be so powerless...

YouTube: President Obama reacts to the mass shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, that took the lives of nine people Wednesday night. It was not nearly the first time he'd made remarks after a mass shooting.

I like the Irish parody site Waterford Whispers News' take on it, although some people may think it goes too far.

Their current poll is 'What Is Your Favourite US Mass Shooting So Far This Year?', with 142 choices.

The only heartening thing for me is the number where the shooter's name is unknown (unless it means they weren't caught).

It does happen in other "advanced" countries. It has happened here in Canada, it has happened in Germany, in the UK. The fact that it ONLY has happened 7 times in 7 years in the US -the third most populous country in the world behind China and India- is actually remarkable in it's rarity.

It's actually a pretty good record, statistically.

The "backdrop of day-to-day violence" needs FAR more attention spent on it than these shocking aberrations. It's horrific. It's a tragedy. It is so "black and white" as to be able to be ignored as anything other than a true terrorist act.

It is also as completely unpreventable as a tornado or a hurricane.

More people died today in North America in horrific, tragic -racist or otherwise- but completely preventable ways. THAT is what needs changing. Talking about trying to prevent single assailant mass murder is stupid and wasteful.

You are correct. Shootings of this nature do in fact happen in other "advanced" countries.

However, I think if we look at the frequency of this kind of shooting in other advanced countries, we'll find that America still have more shooting, more frequently, than most (or all) the other "advanced" countries combined.

To draw a comparison, if we use "school shootings" as an example, ignoring all other types of shootings, Canada, for example has had fifteen school shootingssince 1884. In the United States, there have been 168 school shooting eventssince 2000

To put this another way: America has had as many school shootings SO FAR THIS YEAR as Canada has had in it's ENTIRE HISTORY.
