Save the Internet Before July 16th: Say NO to the FCC

statueofmike says...

MINK, you have a good point, except I think you missed one thing: Even if you could pay a fee to be guaranteed good tomatoes, everyone else who couldn't afford that fee would be left with even greater assurances of WORSE tomatoes.

In the same way, allowing these 'internet backbone' companies to support alternative networks, which takes potential and already existing resources from the 'generic' or free network.

What is a meme?

The Dalai Lama - A Simple Tibetan Monk

statueofmike says...

A similar situation occurred in Iran, also during the 19th century. The difference was, the religious leader didn't appeal as much to Americans for support, and instead of holding the titles "Dalai Lama," he's known as the "Ayatollah," effectively equivalent positions.

He's also a theocratic dictator, whose goal is to return to power over what we in the west would call "multitudes of uneducated slaves."

What do you really know about the Dalai Lama, other than the fact that he's a religious leader who wants control of his country? (He also doesn't believe in killing, I'll give you that.)

Rolling Different Tires Down A Ski Jump Hill

statueofmike says...

Friction during the downhill roll is what provides the horizonal momentum. The tire begins with a certain amount of potential energy from it's height, and when it falls this energy is transformed into momentum. You use a continuously curved ramp to try to get as much of that momentum to approach a near-45 degree angle as you can. Eliminating friction from the tire-slope contact would be like dropping a tire on a small 45-degree plate. You might as well just bounce it off of your roof and see how far it 'flies.'

It seems more like the rotary motion is wavelike doesn't mean that it is directly related to the waves creating the motion. Just like the shape of the paper drum determines what direction the material shifts, the direction that the material is shifting will affect the patterns it makes.

To say that this is a relationship between waves and matter is like citing van Gogh as the relationship between liquids and solids. Look for the way the liquids dry on a solid, then BECOME solid themselves!

The MPAA Pirates a Movie

This entire film just pissed me off. At the MPAA, not Kirby Dick. You could say that, yes, everything in the movie is of a certain... iberl-aye... persuasion... so... FUCK YOU! They're censoring OUR culture, CENSORING what our society and race are exposed to on one of the largest scales in history!

The MPAA serves the same purpose as a newspaper editor, making sure that content is 'appropriate' for it's audience, whatever the context detirmines 'appropriate' to mean. The difference is, that when one newspaper only delivers hateful or what you may see as ignorant news, we all have the option of reading something else. The MPAA tries to govern all cinema, everywhere it can. Imagine if any one newspaper in America were given the power to edit every other in the world. That's why the MPAA should end.

Rolling Different Tires Down A Ski Jump Hill

The rigidity is important to a certain limited extent. A tire that is ideally rigid will flex at the beginning of the ramp, then snap back to it's normal shape right at the end, adding an extra elastic force to push it up from the jump. A tire that is too rigid will not take advantage of this, and one that is too elastic will not recover enough of it's original shape to take full advantage of the ramp's incline.

In the same way, where a correctly weighted tire will force the ramp down and then back up in time to add a lifting force to it's launch, too massive of a tire will push the ramp too hard, so it really depends arbitrarily on the construction of the kick ramp.

Other than the rigidity, the grip of the tire on the green will affect how much of the initial potential energy is retained for jump speed. You'll notice how some of the tires grip the launch ramp pretty well, while others begin bouncing and skidding down? The ones that begin to skid don't pick up as much speed as the others, and consequently don't fly as far.

Next to the rigidity affecting grip and launch angle, and tread affecting grip, it seemed like air resistance was negligible. Though the heavy machinery tire would have been the only one considerably less influenced by air resistance, it didn't count because it literally destroyed any experiment.

It's fun to think about what is affecting these, but still isn't the real point of the whole thing to see some big wheels fly high up in the air and then come crashing down!?

One Red Paper Clip

statueofmike says...

The high 'moral' lesson might find a flagship in this story, but I find a much more practical and powerful message in it. It's the story of one human screwing a bunch of others out of value and assets for his own good. Better yet, he gets them all to joke and giggle about it, distracting them with the novelty of the trade so that no one, not even himself, has to look beneath it.

"Hey kids, if you're clever enough, you can take advantage of everyone else instead of 'earning' your own house!"

That's a classic lesson for the kiddies. Golden.

Richard Dawkins "Stumped".............by an idiot

Oh yeah, and about the nature of all the comments on the Sift- This is the only place that I bother to read them, too. Though there still get to be so many on certain videos, and people leave so many comments trying to reiterate what they're saying it can become tedious trying to work through them, I believe that it shows a strong amount of integrity in the comments over all. Generally intelligible sentences from everyone, and not too often do we degenerate into epic rants where we try to repeat ourselves from every possible angle. (it's more a matter of etiquette than anything, depending on how you believe your comment is being recieved.) Maybe we could leave some tips somewhere about leaving good comments... ah yeah I'm sure they're in the FAQ now aren't they? Which we've all memorized, right?

Sure there will always be people who just spout out their first response no matter how many other people have already said it. You can't stop that, but you can learn to identify it for yourself, and realize that there's no need to get all defensive because someone with a different point of view has a small cadre of short-attention-spanned followers. It's actually slightly embarrassing when you see even people you agree with lambaste the comment column in a drunken fashion.

So cheers to you all, and thanks for the well-natured and concerned comments you've all left somewhere.
