The moment the rocket hit Kremenchuk

moonsammy says...

I don't think that was a smart thing to do, just a panicked thing.

It was interesting seeing some people get straight up clocked by the shockwave while others were able to run (though perhaps with hearing damage, based on the last clip).

The guy that went into the water.... is that the smart thing to do? I imagine the impact force of debris falling from the sky's hitting him in the water will likely be lessened. But the trade off is you can't properly see what's coming down, the ability to evade is limited too, and if you're hit by a big debris and got stuck/or knocked unconscious in the water... the likelihood of you drowning and the chance of people finding & rescuing you is less too, no?

Trump Wanted Armed Groups At His Jan 6 Rally

moonsammy says...

So here's a question I find interesting: did the Secret Service technically kidnap Trump, if he didn't want them to take him where they took him? I mean, totally the correct call for them to make, but it looks like the president assaulted his own Secret Service after they kidnapped him. Which is so very, very fucked.

Joe Biden's Actual "To Do List"

moonsammy says...

...so? Presidents and other national leaders attend a huge variety of functions, and aren't going to want to do a run-through for every single one of them. A brief overview of his role on a note card seems a very pragmatic solution. I do want to point out that it doesn't tell him what to say - the President's staff expects he'll be able to improvise something serviceable. Because he's an intelligent, capable adult human being.

Oh, and that clip of him saying something about "dropped dead unexpectedly" - that looks like stuttering to me. He seemed to be trying to say something else, and just couldn't get it out. His backup word choice was inelegant at best. Stuttering is something Biden's known to have struggled with for most of his life, and generally he handles it very well. Sometimes though he seems to still stumble on something, and this might've been a case of that. Maybe not - maybe he had a total brain fart / senior moment and we should be concerned... but it certainly didn't seem like a noteworthy incident to me.

Meanwhile, in actual important news: the J6 hearings have demonstrated the former President clearly made numerous efforts to remain in power despite having definitely lost in a fair election. (Well, fair in terms of having been run competently and without demonstrable fraud. Trump still had what I consider a significant unfair advantage in that Republicans have an inherent edge via the Electoral College. He just lost the popular vote by MORE this time around, leading to a loss of the EC as well.)

Greed knows no specific political affiliation, nor does charitability. We should all insist on policies that do more to help those in actual need of it, and to reduce rampant profiteering at the expense of human suffering. Squeezing your captive customers just because you can is a pretty universal "dick move." Imagine if we had solid policies in place that actually encouraged giving a hand up to those who've encountered misfortune, rather than treating them as suspicious and dangerous.

I think a big part of the problem, which I was sad to see go entirely unaddressed by the show, is that owning rental properties is such an appealing option for wealthy private investors. The long-term (and generally short-term) returns on real estate in the US have been absolutely bonkers for many years, and it's a much more stable investment than the stock market can prove to be. Professionally, I've been in a position to have an understanding of the finances of many wealthy people, and damn near everyone with net worth of more than a couple million ends up having quite substantial real estate holdings.

How about we instead find a way to award stable profits to those investing in schools, or public parks, or the arts, or... I don't know, anything else which doesn't ultimately take people out of their homes?

Tom Scott trying to deal with his phobia of roller coasters

moonsammy says...

Very much so! It's worth watching, he's generally been a very authentic presenter, and he really doesn't shy away from being exposed here. Plus the footage of him on the 2nd and 3rd coasters is awesome - on each ride he goes through a major transformation in mood and it's really fun to watch.

What if it comes with a contractual requirement that you personally stop engaging in any activities which might infringe on their exclusive right to worry your mother? Feels like a trap to me.

Why is this tagged NSFW? Am I missing something racy beyond implications in the lyrics?

I would like you to assign someone to worry my mother, thank you. That’s going to free up some time for me.

The Dutch Know How To Party

moonsammy says...

That's absolutely happening here - it's a really good practical example of the speed of sound. It doesn't really take much distance for the effect to be noticeable - I was in marching band in high school and when we were spread out across a football field it was *really* important we pay attention to the conductor, or everything would end up sounding super muddled to the audience.

Is it me or can you see the crowd father away from the stage lagging behind a bit?

If you have a venue sufficiently enormous the sound does take a little longer to travel back. I'd be super excited if that was the case!

It's a good video, and I upvoted, but doesn't this constitute a violation of the "no self link" policy? My understanding was that there's no flexibility on that...

Willow | Official Teaser Trailer | Disney+

I'm... cautiously optimistic? My assumption was it would be a remake, but continuing in that world could actually be really cool. Love that Warwick Davis is in it, and it looks like Val Kilmer is included at least somewhat (can't imagine it'll be a HUGE part)...

Deceiving the brain with the rubber hand illusion

I've seen this demonstrated before, but the individual finger / knuckle reflex testing was new, and damned interesting. I have a hard time making my individual fingers twitch on purpose, the instinctive response working that well is impressive.

Also, this guy seems high as *fuck* to me. Anyone else?
