Obama ftw!

I love how Pakistan is the only foreign country with more Romney supporters. I would like to think it's because they're sick of Obama's droning (as I am), but I think it has more to do with how similar the Christian right-wing agenda is to that of radical Islam (Pakistan being the land of Islamic "purity" 'n all). Hate on gays and deprive them of rights? Check. Degrade women and deprive them of rights? Check. Trivialise rape or say you deserve it? Check. And to think that Obama's the secret Muslim, ha.

I am glad she did this, I just wish there wouldn't always have to be the "it's an act" reaction. It's understandable that, when faced with something so horrible, we wish it were not true. That being said, it's important to be aware that questioning a woman's (or man's) honesty in the case of sexual abuse can be extremely hurtful to the victim (and other victims of SA who are reading those remarks), who can feel like their trust is being abused once again. I was quite disgusted when looking up this story to find that all of the news outlets stressed the fact that "some commenters questioned the veracity of her claims", as if there is any validity to what some idiot redditors have to say.

As difficult as this must be, I think more people should do it. Everyone (or almost everyone) knows the horrifying statistics of sexual abuse, but they're just numbers. It's testimonies like this that bring the reality of it all home (and, hopefully, the ass-hole perps straight to prison).

Digital Aristotle: Thoughts on the Future of Education

Very interesting commentary, but there is a significant problem with the conclusion, in that it excludes one of schools' essential functions, namely learning to be a functional part of a human society. A good teacher not only imparts factual knowledge, but provides (in conjunction with the school) a model of social interaction, with its unspoken rules, its ethics, etc etc, all things no amount of Digital Aristotling will ever be able to provide. This model is not always good (see for example the "shut up and listen/follow" model, creating mindless drones incapable of critical thought), and that of course needs to be improved. But children will always need adult humans to show how one (inter)acts in society, and that cannot be done with 50-100 students to one teacher. There has to be the possibility for personal interaction.
