Thanks for sounding off on this, WD! A really great book that touches on much of the *controversy surrounding the "curing" of "disabilities" (deafness, dwarfism, autism, etc.) is andrew solomon's "Far From the Tree." Really eye opening.

Even if deafness can be "cured" with implants and stuff, there's the question of whether it should be cured for everyone. I know there are deaf communities that feel their culture and language are threatened by the increasing prevalence of implants. After all, why would anyone learn sign language if there are no deaf people, other than as a curiosity, or a secret language? Languages, after all, help bind cultures together.

Personally, I think we should give children every opportunity to live their lives unimpeded by disabilities, even if it means some people feel threatened, or it means the end of some communities. (Btw, I extend this view to screening for genetic disorders during early pregnancy, to allow parents to end the pregnancy should such a disorder be found. I know some parents who have children with Down's think this idea sounds horrid, but I'm of the firm opinion that we can't go around preserving various disabilities that have no advantageous traits just to keep from offending some people.)

George Galloway Storms Out Of Debate With Israeli Student

griefer_queafer says...

Listen, I consider myself to be as critical of the Israeli state as I can be short of wishing its total eradication from the map. I am sympathetic to Galloway's views, and I respect his passion. But it seems that this man is mistaken in his logic. On the one hand, he outwardly refuses to debate with Israeli citizens. This means that he drawing a line (a rather flimsy one, I might add, according to his own logic) between Israeli citizens and the rest of the world. So, if he doesn't recognize Israel as a state, how can he disavow the very citizens it claims as its own? Okay. That is the most basic point. Very basic. The problem that I see here, ultimately, is that his refusal to debate with this kid is NOT actually based upon an objective distinction between Israeli citizens and those who have no formal allegiance to the Israeli state. What he is doing is making a distinction between himself and people who fundamentally DO NOT agree with his views. He makes the point early on that he has had plenty of Israelis on his show. He seems to think that this validates him somehow, but it in fact invalidates his whole position, and reveals it as being wholly ideological, and, I might add, narcissistic and self-promoting. Without debate and disagreement, politics is nothing. I can respect Galloway's ideas, but I totally reject his understanding of politics and debate.

Fast Eggs!!!

griefer_queafer says...

Well, to be totally honest I did not imagine this would make it to the top 15 lol. The reason I thought it was siftable was because he is actually quite fast. I mean, its not some eye-popping speed, and he's not even trying, but that's part of what makes it interesting. This is just an "everyday" speed for these guys, and yet few of us probably imagined that an omlette sandwich could be made so quickly. But beyond that, and I hope this is not just me trying to intellectualize it, I would say that I like the surreal quality of the video (the guy's strange paranoia [or whatever] about the camera, the amount of eggs, and the sounds)... its all just very strange and fun. Like a little uncanny slice of life. I guess part of that depends on my NOT being Indian, but I dunno, that's my take.
