Big Think Interview With Peter Ward

Really really good vid, certainly gives a very good overview of the chain of events that cause global warming to be life ending.

From what he's explained, it seems to be - less ice at the poles -> less difference in temperature between hot and cold areas -> less ocean currents -> ocean anoxia -> hydrogen sulfide.

Many of the other issues would cause local crises, but living on a planet with no ocean life and with poisonous gas everywhere seems pretty nasty.

Looks like it will be decent, although it looks like they took some of the ideas for the characters from League of Legends characters - i.e. the Twisted Fate doppelganger.

The Hole in the Ocean

yea I was a bit confused when they started talking about the Marianas trench. Good vid though, very informative. The part where they showed how we know about the earths polarity flipping every few hundred thousand years was really amazing.

Kinda sums up my thoughts on Harris. You can watch about 10-15 of his video's and you'll think he's fairly smart and has some good ideas. Eventually though, you'll realise he's always using the same arguments, and he tends to stereotype pretty heavily, specifically against those of the Islamic faith.

Everything We Think We Know About Addiction Is Wrong

ghark says...

There are many different models of addiction, what we know is not necessarily 'wrong', it's just not complete, and one model (of addiction) certainly doesn't apply to everyone. Some people lack impulse control, some people learn addictive behaviour patterns socially, some people use addictive substances to fill an emptiness inside themselves.

So I guess the point is that both the experiments provided useful information about addiction, but this video does provide some really good insight into the flaws of the first one, and links well with the quite horrific prison situation in the US.
