Well, I wouldn't want to do this 'without' a cable. Let's assume for the moment that this isn't fake. What happens if they get halfway up, then the car starts to slide backwards? Since it's a Ski Jump, it's made to have things speed down it and fly off. I'd hate to do that in a car (I think I saw that on Top Gear somewhere).

My guess is that the cable is a safety locking mechanism that prevents the car from sliding backwards. Note when the car fails to climb the ramp, I don't see it slide backwards much. I don't think there's really any another way to provide this safety measure. Well, at least without damaging the car and/or ramp...

I think this video is a play on/parody of 'Mazinger Z' (Tranzor Z in the US). The guy robot had rocket punches, the girl robot had rocket boobs. Although, I bet there are 900 other Japanese cartoon examples of this as well.
