Which is the Killer, Current or Voltage?

draak13 says...

It's actually slightly more complicated still. With the power supply he's using, a DC power supply, he could turn it up to 100+ volts and hold both leads without issue (not touch them to his tongue, but hold them in his hands would be fine). I've done exactly that before; I could feel a slight amount of discomfort as current flowed through my fingers at both leads (the point of highest current density in the circuit that is my body), but it could otherwise be said that it 'tickled'. I've also had experiences once or twice in my life where I accidentally touched 120V AC, and it most certainly did NOT tickle, it HURT.

What people don't realize about humans (and even regular tap water) is that both are actually highly resistive to DC current, in the megaohms region. Once you get to 10's of Hz, for example 60Hz, 100V starts becoming quite deadly. The capacitance in our body (and in water with ion contaminants) allows current to flow much more readily when you get to alternating current of at least that minimum frequency. The net effect is that your body's resistance decreases as the input frequency increases.

Yes, it is 'current that kills', and even more accurately 'current density that kills', but it's the amount and frequency of voltage applied paired with the frequency specific resistance of the system that determines how much current will flow.

"Desert Breath" | Land Art Installation | By D.A.ST. Arteam

draak13 says...

I wish they would have justified its existence somewhere in there. It's so arbitrary as it's presented here.

The desert sculpture described by @oritteropo at least is meaningful, and is a memorial for a plane that was the victim of terrorism...though interestingly, generating that sculpture cost its creator his marriage and his career.

Stop making sculptures in the sahara!

Harrowing Footage of LGBT Beaten and Humiliated in Russia

draak13 says...

Yes, protest against the government! That's exactly how it should be done, and all of this stuff to raise awareness and rise to action is superb. But...adjust your aim. You're upset with the Russian gov't, not american corporations.

No sir. Sensible sane and rational people would treat sponsorship of Olympic games similarly if sayyy, the Olympic committee used child labor or trashed the environment building the arena and got corporate sponsors behind them....Listen to the gimps come out of the wood-works to protest that bullshit!

WHAT CREATES THE LOWER-CLASS PEOPLE anyway, duh???

All governments work the same dude, a few people force the masses to perform according to their rules or be fined or imprisoned.

Draaakonian bullshit.

Harrowing Footage of LGBT Beaten and Humiliated in Russia

How does this have anything to do with McDonald's, Coca Cola, and Corporate sponsorship of the olympics? Many low class people in america or every other country are the same kind of asshole...the only difference is how the governments and law enforcement work.

PTSD incident.

draak13 says...

From one of the news links:

"PTSD is never a defense or an excuse," said [Psychologist Dr. Michael] Mantell. "It may be an explanation."

He has PTSD, and that causes him major issues. However, this is merely an explanation and not a defense or an excuse because he's still not completely a puppet to his disorder. I've known people who have fought and have PTSD, and they do not do things like this. The wounded woman filming this incident likely has PTSD, and she certainly didn't respond ballistically.

@bareboards2 Stop feeling so bad. He is not completely without control of himself or the situation. Assholes can have PTSD too.

Arkansas Mother Obliterates Common Core in 4 Minutes!

draak13 says...

She made a really good case. I had no idea things were this bad. This really does need more attention.

However...as a person presenting an argument, citing the trembling in your voice (3:40) to merit the importance of your argument doesn't work...especially when you are trying to refute that this isn't just a group of hysterical middle class mothers less than 30 seconds prior.

You can be shot by an unloaded gun

draak13 says...

This isn't moronic in this slightest; When she says, 'many people have been killed by an unloaded gun,' she is talking about the subject as a metaphoric unloaded gun...because she passed high school english, and she can do that. The idea that 'an unloaded gun can still kill' is actually an extremely common rule in gun safety. Many accidents happen every year because people pull the trigger of a gun that seems harmless with the clip empty, but with a bullet accidentally left in the chamber. This is the reason that you never point any gun, loaded or not, at any living thing without killing intent.

Given that the bill is for the general public of the state of california, does it seem probable that one of those millions of people might not have the sensibility required to maintain proper gun safety? Further, does it seem probable that at least 1 death will happen in the next few years because this bill has passed? How many probable deaths are warranted before something like this shouldn't be passed?

This issue is not black and white.

Shocking medical story

draak13 says...

This is really quite extreme. This really is a story that needs to be shared; I had no idea that vet care was so poor until I saw this. Awareness really needs to be raised.

Swedish trick with a bandana??

draak13 says...

That's how the trick is actually performed in kiddie magic sets; there is a small pouch to hide a coin, or a bandanna, or the fabric square is actually a well-made fabric bag.

What blows me away is that unless youtube is fooling me, it should be extremely hard to hide a banana peel in such a bag! I would have to imagine that it wouldn't lay nearly as flat as he had it.

rancor said:

I bet the "fabric square" was actually more of a bag. Folding it up by the corners lets him easily put it into the bag part, then mush it flat, fling it open, and show both sides of the bag!

Awesome routine. What a laugh he has.

Highly Biased Child Protective Services Interview

draak13 says...

It would be important to know the other side.

That said, without knowing the other side, it gets pretty outrageous within the first 4 minutes. Regardless of what the other side is, it's obvious that the administration being consulted is highly prejudice. They are not acting as an impartial party. It is obvious that they are inventing reasons to find fault.

TEDTalks | Eleanor Longden: The voices in my head

draak13 says...

This was amazing!

Many mental 'illnesses' can lead to sensory hallucinations, and it's likely that everyone knows someone with some such condition. There are neuroscientific reasons for these hallucinations, where sensory information is cross-linking with different portions of the brain. A person experiencing this is certainly abnormal, though the result can be harnessed as advantageous for a person to gain superhuman powers. A person who hallucinates halos of color around numbers gains an extra pneumonic for remembering them, a person who perceives a halo of color around people gains insight towards some of their own hidden feelings toward that person.

Many of us have problems dealing with traumatic events, or finding a healthy way to emotionally cope with problems. Some of us find healthy ways, and many of us don't, though it's an internal struggle for all of us. In her case, her condition let's her have an EXTERNAL struggle with her problems, which she uses as a tool to help her cope with otherwise unmanageable emotional issues.

Kudos to her for helping to remove some of the stigma for some of these mental disorders! I wish she could expand her horizon to people with other disorders, to help them achieve the same level of understanding and benefit.

He clearly *did* run the red light. At the very start of the video, you can see the traffic light for cross traffic is yellow, if you look at the top left of the screen. At 0:06, the yellow light vanishes, meaning that it is now a red light. The truck then appears in the video crossing the intersection.

I don't know what was indefensible about this video.

The 'Wal-Mart Cheer': Most Depressing Thing You'll Ever See

draak13 says...

I've worked at walmart as a summer job, along with many other summer jobs. It was a job among jobs; no more memorable or terrible than the previous job. The brainwashing seems to be among the internet folk, who use it as a scapegoat for all the evil in the world.

@VoodooV has it right; if you want to make more than minimum wage, you have to be a skilled laborer.

Best Reaction Ever to a Magic Trick

draak13 says...

I haven't worked it out completely, but I believe it's a very clever device that is worn on the arms (hidden by the sleeves), and somehow extends/retracts or picks up/drops with some cleverly concealed mechanism such as flexing the bicep.
