Olympic Diver Tom Daley Comes Out

Sotto_Voce says...

I'm not aware of it being a common strategem. I mean, maybe it is, but we can't just automatically assume someone is lying when they say they're bi. Genuinely bisexual people exist (example: me!), and I don't see any reason to doubt that Daley is one of them.

Isn't it a common stratagem to announce you're bi rather than gay? I suppose it's suppposed to make it easier for friends/relatives/psycho fans who don't know him to accept it.

Olympic Diver Tom Daley Comes Out

Sotto_Voce says...

Not sure how I feel about this being in the "Gay" channel. Daley has made it pretty clear that he's bisexual, not gay. And it's a pretty common problem that male bisexuals are regarded as a myth. People say things like "If you want to have sex with dudes, you're gay". I've seen a lot of news outlets report this story as Daley coming out as gay, and that just seems like more erasure of male bisexuality.

Alexa Cruz describes the horror of being a porn star

Sotto_Voce says...

When employees at, say, Walmart protest about poor working conditions, do you respond the same way? "You chose the job and you can leave any time, so I don't have any sympathy for you"? She's talking about horrible employment practices and poor worker care in the industry in which she was employed. I think it's a good thing for people to know when employees are being exploited, no matter what line of work they're in, and I'm glad she's speaking out about it.

Wait, you fuck people on camera for money in an inherently exploitative industry where people are objectified to the extreme and then complain that you are exploited and objectified?

I'm sorry, but I don't have any sympathy for her. She chose that life and could have said no and left at any time.

Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis: Justin Bieber

Sotto_Voce says...

I'm pretty sure that if it wasn't staged Bieber wouldn't have continued to sit there after being spanked with a belt. So definitely staged, sorry to disappoint.

Please tell me it wasn't staged or else I'll have to admit Bieber's actually a pretty good actor!

Iron Man Balloon Costume

Sotto_Voce says...

This is very impressive and all, but I find the over-the-top music hilarious, especially the crescendo at the end. Close your eyes, and you'd think he'd just summited Everest or something. Open your eyes, and you see a dude posing in a goofy-ass balloon suit.

Ricky Gervais and Jim Norton Discuss Rape Joke Controversy

Sotto_Voce says...

Yeah, Ricky, it does suck when silly people tweet you poorly thought out complaints about your jokes.

Meanwhile, after Lindy West debated Jim Norton on rape jokes, she was the target of literally hundreds of tweets and comments saying she should be raped (or that she wishes she was raped but unfortunately she's too ugly).

http://jezebel.com/if-comedy-has-no-lady-problem-why-am-i-getting-so-many-511214385

So excuse me if I don't have much sympathy to spare for the poor oppressed comedian complaining about how people are trying to take away his FREEZE PEACH by criticizing his choice of material.

Let me quote from Lindy's post:

"I don't believe that previously non-raping audience members are going to take to the streets in a rape mob after hearing one rape joke. That's an absurd and insulting mischaracterization. But I do believe that comedy's current permissiveness around cavalier, cruel, victim-targeting rape jokes contributes to (that's contributes—not causes) a culture of young men who don't understand what it means to take this stuff seriously.

And how did they try and prove me wrong? How did they try to demonstrate that comedy, in general, doesn't have issues with women? By threatening to rape and kill me, telling me I'm just bitter because I'm too fat to get raped, and suggesting that the debate would have been better if it had just been Jim raping me."

A massive fly invades the studio - The Graham Norton Show

Sotto_Voce says...

This cuts off before the best part. Graham Norton says, "But you didn't swallow any of it. It's all still there." Chris O'Dowd replies, "That's why I'm a good girl."

Much laughter, while O'Dowd puts on an adorable disgusted-with-myself expression.

Tony Awards 2013 - Neil Patrick Harris and Mike Tyson

Sotto_Voce says...

Tyson had a one-man show on Broadway called "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth". Not a musical connection, but a Broadway connection.

And I too am pretty squicked out by the showbiz rehabilitation of this rapist. Then again, at least Tyson served his time. I'm much more squicked out by Hollywood's lionization of Roman Polanski.

Deano said:

He's not my favourite celeb and it does seem a bit odd to see him here. What's his musical connection? If there is one then maybe fair enough. If not he's got good representation.

Weird that he can barely move in coherent way. Funny the way NPH was pulling him to wear he was supposed to go.

And NPH - what a performance. That's talent right there.

the newsroom-the truth about television news

Sotto_Voce says...

Yup, look at Chris Hayes' show... Informed, measured commentary and detailed analysis on important news stories that aren't part of the usual cable news hype factory. And he's getting absolutely destroyed in the ratings. And, to tell you the truth, as much as I appreciate his show, and as much as I like to think of myself as a discerning and sophisticated consumer of media, I don't think I could watch him regularly. Too boring.

Nice sentiment. Too bad they'd go bankrupt IRL.

Individuals want facts and "real" news, differing opinions and "pure" knowledge.

People want their beliefs reinforced, good to triumph over evil, and -every now and then- a cute picture of a cat.
