Anyone wanna start a Videosift The Old Republic guild? (Videogames Talk Post)

Skeeve says...

I'd join you, but it looks like I'll be out of the country and away from a computer from February on, so I'd only have part of January to play the game.

Sucks, cause I have been looking forward to Old Republic for a while.

Have fun!

RMR - Pulling out of Kyoto: A Part of our Heritage

Yeah, people are making a really big deal of dropping out of it, and I understand wanting to participate in something that will help stop climate change, but if the targets are completely impossible to meet, then there is no point in participating.

There is an article here that says that meeting the requirements could cost $3500 per Canadian, or $30 billion, as a nation, to purchase emission credits.

The only industrial nations to come close to their targets have done it through changing their power generation to cleaner methods, but 70% of Canada's power generation is already "low-emission" and changing the others is almost out of the question at this time.

We should be making an effort to reduce emissions and help the environment, but sticking with an insane plan isn't going to help us get there.>> ^Sagemind:

I've heard all about this as a decision but have heard nothing about the reasoning behind it.
I did read one article that said the targets were so unreachable, we'd have to remove every moving vehicle from the road and go back to horse travel within one year to meet the standards or the penalties would be 14 billion dollars per year. But that's mostly hearsay - I haven't seen anything official.

how to verify military service (Mystery Talk Post)

Skeeve says...

A bit late on the draw here, but if those military databases don't pan out, maybe post some of this guy's claims here. There are a few of us here that could probably spot a Walter Mitty based on where he served, when, what decorations he has, etc.

A lot of military forums have a thread or two about this as well. They should have tips for spotting an impostor and would be even better at verifying claims (forums.military.com has some particularly good threads about this).

I'd be interested to hear how this pans out. There are few things that bother military types as much as a poser claiming to be one of us.>> ^MycroftHomlz:

So far I have nothing. I can't find anything about him on the ship he says he was on. And I cant find him on any of the military websites. So either I have his last name wrong, the databases are incomplete, or he is lying.

The Louis Experiment - What does it mean? (Standup Talk Post)

Skeeve says...

Most of what I would say has already been said by @spoco2 so I'll keep this short:

Companies like EA and Ubisoft have earned a place in my "never, ever pay for their products" list because of their invasive and destructive DRM. To treat a paying customer like a thief is insulting and aggravating.

On the other hand, I have a very strict personal policy of never pirating games from Blizzard, Bethesda and BioWare as these companies have proven that their products are worth my money.

As for other games, if I like them, I buy them. Steam is, IMO, one of the greatest ideas/systems out there when it comes to encouraging the buying of games.

I have no compunctions about torrenting TV shows that I would get for free at home. With a torrent I can watch the content when I want to and don't have to worry about missing it at its regular time-slot.

Movies I treat like a rental: if I like, I will buy. But I agree that a digital download should be a minute fraction of the cost of physical media. I would happily pay a few dollars to download a movie.

With regards to the whole "experiment", I think most non-pirates would be surprised at how many of us would pay if we felt the price was reasonable and worth our dollar. Corporations these days seem to have no clue regarding value for money.

National Defense Authorization Act -- TYT

Skeeve says...

I think the big issue is that, now that Americans are waking up and realizing how "free" they actually are, the powers that be are acting quickly to cement their position at the top.

It brings to mind the rise and fall of the Roman Empire; the Republic was no more but Augustus let the people believe their votes meant something, let them think the republic still functioned until, after generations, the emperors were too entrenched to be removed without violence.

It may not be too late for America, but it's following a similar course.

The "One Album Per Sifter" Quest (Rocknroll Talk Post)

Skeeve says...

One album I can listen to all the way through is Anberlin's album "Cities". It has a good mix of harder (for this kind of alternative rock) and softer songs, the instrumentation is interesting and the lyrics are pretty mature.

Alexithymia is my favorite song, but they are all good.
